On October 27th, Heilongjiang Provincial Final of 2018 “FLTRP Cup” English Public Speaking Contest was held in Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), in which contestants from HUST won prizes and honors: Chen Yingning from class 16-4 of English Major won the first prize (ranking top of all the first-prize winners), Feng Shiting from class 17-2 of Law School got the second prize (ranking top of all the second-prize winners) and Yan Yuqing from class 17-3 of English Major gained the second prize. Professor Jiang Yufeng, President of Heilongjiang Provincial Committee for College Foreign Language Teaching and Director of Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges in HUST, delivered a speech on the opening ceremony of the contest, Professor Zhen Yanhua, Vice Dean in charge of School of Foreign Languages in HUST, was invited as one of the judges, and Ms. Yang Xin, an English teacher of English major, was Coach of the three winners. Leaders both from Teaching Affairs Office and School of Foreign Languages have contributed a lot to the contest.
Altogether 63 contestants from universities in Heilongjiang Province took part in the contest and competed in it with “The Stone, ___” as its theme, in honor of the 40thanniversary of Reform and Opening-up. Contestants were required to talk about Reform and Opening-up from their own perspectives. The contest was made up of two parts: the first was composed of a 3-minute prepared-speech and a 2-minute Q&A, and the second was the impromptu speech. The top five winners in the first part were eligible to compete in the second part. Thanks to their wonderful language abilities, profound thoughts, rich knowledge and elegant stage performance, the contestants interpreted fully the charm of English public speaking and represented the best performance of college students in our province.
The preparation work of the contest lasted nearly 3 months, in which qualifying matches and training sessions were held several times. With the help of the leaders in Teaching Affairs Office and School of Foreign Languages, teachers from School of Foreign Languages worked together with the personnel from Internet-English Club for the selection of the three contestants from more than one hundred candidates by way of qualifying matches comprising the preliminary contest, semi-final and final. In HUST, this contest, regarded as an extension of the in-class English teaching and a practice base for training students’ practical ability, helps greatly to improve students’ comprehensive English ability and acts as a showcase of our fruitful achievement in English education.
