In accordance with the latest data of Essential Science Indicators (ESI), Professor Hu Jun’s academic paper entitledA Variance-Constrained Approach to Recursive State Estimation for Time-Varying Complex Networks with Missing Measurementswas published inAutomatica—one of the top-level journals in the field of the Control Theory—and was selected into ESI hot papers. With Hu Jun, an outstanding young professor at Department of Applied Mathematics in HUST, as the lead author, the paper was co-written by British Professor Wang Zidong at Brunel University London, German Professor Steven Liu at University of Kaiserslautern and Chinese Professor Gao Huijun at Harbin Institute of Technology. HUST is where Professor Hu and the correspondence author work. This paper for the first time solves the variance-constrained problem of the recursive state estimation for time-varying complex networks with missing measurements. So far, seven of Professor Hu’s academic papers have been selected into ESI highly cited papers since his arrival to HUST. Moreover, the one of his papers which has been cited over 680 times in SCI and over 1,200 times in Google has ranked in the ESI global top 0.1% hot papers.

In addition, Professor Wu Senlin from the Department of Applied Mathematics in HUST has published one of his papers entitledOn Birkhoff Orthogonality and Iisosceles Orthogonality in Normed Linear Spacesin an international journalAequationes Mathematicae. Having caught the eyes of the scholars since its publication, the paper of his was also selected into ESI highly cited papers.

WithThe Overall Plan to Promote the WorldFirst-class Universities and First-class Disciplinesissued by the State Council of the PRC in 2005, the construction of double first-class universities in China has merged into the fast lane and developed at its full speed. On the basis of the international practice, ESI is generally regarded as one of the most importantcriterions in the evaluation of the First-class Universities and First-class Disciplines. Nowadays, ESI is quite commonly taken by a large number of famous universities and colleges home and abroad as one the most effective ways to show their strengths in disciplines. As special attention has been paid to ESI by universities and the administrative departments on education in China, in recent years, more and more universities in China begin to focus their future goal on increasing the numbers of disciplines entering into the top 1% of the global ESI. As a whole, the entry of the two papers into ESI and the great achievements contributed by the research teams of our university prove that HUST has achieved a number of great initial results in terms of mathematics discipline constructions

[An Introduction to ESI]

ESI, an acronym of Essential Science Indicators, is one of the basic analytical and evaluating criterions used in measuring the performance of scientific research and tracking the trend of scientific development. ESI was first proposed by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI)—one of the world-famous academic publishing organizations in 2001. Classified into 22 scientific fields, ESI is taken as one of the most important indicators in the evaluation of academic level, creativity and influence of academic institutions, universities and scholars. By means of the following 6 indicators like the numbers of papers, the citation frequency, the highly cited papers, the hot papers, the advanced scientific papers and so on, ESI fully evaluates from every possible angle the scientific research level of a country or a region, the academic fame of an institution, the academic influence of a scientist and the academic level of a journal. ESI highly cited papers refer to those that have been published in the past decade and the citation frequency of which has ranked into 1% of that of the papers in the same scientific field published in the same year. ESI hot papers are defined as those published in the past 2 years with the citation frequency ranking into 0.1% of that of the very discipline in the past 2 months. Because ESI highly cited papers are usually taken as the scientific reflections of the academic papers and the influences, the possession of the paper numbers symbolizes the achievements and the influences that a discipline has ever made. First introduced into the discipline evaluation indicator system by Ministry of Education of the PRC (MOE), the number of ESI cited papers is also a sine qua non for the application for the Collaborative Innovation Center for Advanced Science which is an institution attached to Collaborative Innovation Capability Upgrading Program (2011 Program).
