HUST Successfully Organizes the 5th National Symposium on Innovative Teaching of Mathematics Courses in Colleges and Universities

On December 23rd, under the guidance of the Professional Committee of Mathematical Education ofChina Associationof Higher Education, the 5thNational Symposium on Innovative Teaching of Mathematics Courses in Colleges and Universities, co-organized by Harbin University of Science and Technology and China Machine Press Co., Ltd., was successfully held in the Dream Town of Science and Technology in Harbin.VicePresidentof HUSTChen Qingguo, and theDeputySecretary-General of China Education Association of Machinery IndustryHan Xiaojieattended thesymposiumand delivered speeches.TheDirectorWang Yiwenand DeputyDirectorShen Taoof the Academic Affairs Office,theDeanSong Qingkunand the Vice DeanZhang HuioftheSchool of Sciencesat HUST, theSecretary-GeneralZhang Chaoof Heilongjiang Provincial Mathematics Society, and Song Guoliang, theViceDean oftheSchool of Mathematics and Statistics at Northeast Petroleum Universityalsoattended thesymposium. More than 10 experts from Jilin University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Beijing University of Science and Technology, and more than 80 front-line teachers from home and abroadtogether participated inthesymposium.

Vice President Chen Qingguo of HUST warmly welcomed the experts and scholars and introduced them to the long history of the university. Over the past 70-plus years since its establishment, HUST has adhered to the educational philosophy of former president Wang Daheng: combining teaching and research, integrating science and engineering, and cultivating talents with both abilities and ethics to educate and cultivate outstanding talents for the party and country. Situated in Heilongjiang, the university has firmly established itself in the electromechanical industry through consistent efforts.Now it has grown into a“double first-class”construction university in Heilongjiang Province with strong comprehensive strength and distinctive characteristics.Facing the frontier ofglobalscience and technology and industry needs,HUSThasdeepened the reform of education and teachingandpromoted the adjustment of disciplines and majors.We havebuilta group of national first-class undergraduate majorsandestablishedsevennational scientific research platforms under various ministerial departments andthreemodern industrialschoolsat the provincial level. It has also established deep strategic cooperation relationships with many well-known domestic enterprises to achieve a deep integration of education, talent, innovation, and industry chain. Vice President Chen Qingguo recognized the significant research achievements of the mathematical discipline in the School of Sciences, particularly in Orlicz space geometry theory. He also congratulated the mathematical discipline on being selected as a“double first-class”construction cultivation discipline in Heilongjiang Province and on successfully passing the doctoral program verification.

College mathematics courses are effective ways to cultivate students’logical thinking, application ability and innovation ability. With the advent of the era of artificial intelligence and big data, new challenges have emerged for the teaching of college mathematics courses. The symposium engaged in in-depth discussions around advanced educational concepts such as curriculum design, the integration of basic coursework with competitions, the establishment of first-class courses and majors, and the creation of new forms of high-quality teaching materials. The symposium proposed innovative ideas for enhancing the application of digital high-quality resources and innovative teaching methods in education and teaching reform. It aimed to accelerate the formation of new forms of education and teaching, revamp the mathematics course teaching system, and bolster the integration of curriculum ideology and digital technology in course materials construction. Furthermore, it suggested new measures for national infrastructure development, interdisciplinary integration, and improving talent cultivation quality.

This symposium was rich in content, exceptional in its reports, and deep in discussion. It provided a valuable communication platform for college mathematics teachers in terms of teaching design, innovative methods, and course delivery methods. It played a positive role in promoting the teaching reform of college mathematics and statistics courses and high-quality talent cultivation during the“14thFive-Year Plan”period.
