“Contemporary Pragmatic Issues Research (Ice City) Forum” was Successfully Held at HUST

On November 25-26, the“Contemporary Pragmatic Issues Research (Ice City) Forum”, hosted by our universityand organized by School of Foreign Languages, was successfully held,with the support of the expertsonpragmatics from multiple well-known domestic universities. The forum was aimed atactively respondingto the development trends of pragmatics at home and abroad, keepingup with international academic frontiers, focusingon multi-angle research of language use, promotingthe prosperity of Chinese pragmatics in Northeastern colleges and universities, and stimulatingteachers and students to develop academic interests and pursue higher goals of serving national economic and social development.Nearly 300 pragmatics experts, scholars, teachers and students from across the country attended the forum.

Vice President Chen Qingguo attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. On behalf of the university, President Chen expressed his warm welcome and heartfelt thanks to the guests and experts who attended the forum. He expressed that this forum is an important activity, representing our university’s commitment to promoting academic exchanges and disciplinary development, and a powerful measure to promote disciplinary development strategy. Professor He Gang, Vice Chairman of China Pragmatics Association, delivered a speech. He expressed his delight to have the opportunity to attend this forum and share the latest research insights. He said that our university is a strong and actively enterprising university.The School of Foreign Languages at our university is vibrant and uplifting, with a noble sense of mission and a team ofcompetentteachers and graduate students. Therefore, the participating experts believe that the School of Foreign Languages at our university is capable of hosting a wonderful and successful forum for pragmatic research.The participating experts will definitely strive to complete the schedule of the forum, so that the participating teachers and students can gain new knowledge, broaden their horizons, and have a happy exchange. He wished the forum a complete success. The opening ceremony of the forum was hosted by Ma Yanhui,Directorof the School of Foreign Languages.

The theme of this forum is the multi-angle exploration of language use. Keynote speeches were delivered by nine famous scholars specialize in Chinese pragmatics, including He Gang from East China Normal University, Professor Chen Xinren from Nanjing University, Professor Liu Fengguang from Dalian University of Foreign Languages, Professor Feng Guangwu from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Hu Xuhui, doctoral supervisor at Peking University, Professor Wu Yaxin from Ocean University of China, Professor Ren Wei from Beihang University, Professor Zhou Ling from Northeast Normal University, and Professor Mao Yansheng from Harbin Engineering University. The topics of the presentations covered various dimensions of the exploration of pragmatic abilities, the review and outlook of the analytical philosophy tradition in pragmatics, the definition of pragmatic facts, meta-linguistic negation, conversation analysis: research issues, corpus, perspectives, and findings, as well as other cutting-edge and focal issues in the field of pragmatics research. During the forum, there were five sub-forums including“Research on Theory and Methodology of Pragmatics”,“Applied Research on Pragmatics”,“Cross-linguistic Research in Pragmatics”, and the Graduate Student Academic Sprouts Forum (I) and (II). Additionally, a round-table discussion on“Cutting-edge and Focal Issues in Pragmatics Research”had been finished.

Professor Yan Ming, Chairman of the Foreign Language and Literature TeachingAdvisory Boardof Colleges and Universities in Heilongjiang Province, attended the closing ceremony and delivered a speech.Professor Yan said that this conference provided a valuable platform for domestic pragmatic researchers to share the latest research achievements, discuss hot topics, and stimulate innovative thinking.The success of this conferencewill serve asa new starting point. The foreign language scholars in HeilongjiangProvincewillretainthis positive academic atmosphere, further deepen academic exchanges and cooperation, and promote the greater development of academic career in colleges and universities in Heilongjiang Province. The closing ceremony was hosted by Yang Rui, Vice Director of the School of Foreign Languages.

During theforum, participants conducted in-depth exchanges on focal and hot topics in pragmatic research, shared the latest research achievements and academic perspectives, actively explored theprinciplesand mechanisms behind language behavior, and promoted the expansion of pragmatics from traditional fields to more interdisciplinary areas. After the forum, it is believed that experts and scholars will continue to maintain their enthusiasm and pursuit for academic research, constantly explore and innovate, and contribute their wisdom and strength to academic development.
