Since 2007, with the purpose of selecting outstanding talents, Mitsubishi Electric Automation (China) Ltd has, in cooperation with the institutions of higher learning in China, initiated the yearly “Mitsubishi Electric Cup” National Electrical Engineering and Automation Contest, a scientific and technological activity facing all the undergraduates, postgraduates and students in higher colleges and/or universities. The 12th “Mitsubishi Electric Cup” National Electrical Engineering and Automation Contest is hosted by Teaching Guiding Committee for College Electrical Engineering Majors under the Ministry of Education, National Automation Association, undertaken by Mitsubishi Electric Automation (China) Ltd and HUST, sponsored by Teaching Guiding Committee for Electrical Vocational Education, UNESCO Industrial Liaison Chairs and Electrical Engineering Education Committee of China Electro-technical Society.

Development of the Contest

In 2007, Mitsubishi Electric Automation (China) Ltd has, in cooperation with the institutions of higher learning in China, started the first “Mitsubishi Electric Cup” National Electrical Engineering and Automation Contest, which was innovation-oriented and aimed to cultivate innovative talents in practice and manufacture. With the expansion of the organization and the scale, today the much more mature contest features the two themes of innovative design and system application, which are held on alternate years. Currently the contest is one of the preliminary contests for the National “Internet Plus” Innovation & Entrepreneurship Contests for College Students.

In 2007, nearly 100 professors and students of 19 teams from 9 higher institutions advanced to the final, while in 2018, 67 teams competed fiercely in the 12th contest. In the first contest, the purpose was to innovate; in the third contest, innovative designs and techniques were the two groups of contest; and in the 4th contest, the organizing committee changed the contest into two forms: innovation and application, which are held on alternate years. Each year tens of thousands of excellent students from hundreds of higher institutes take part in the contest, which plays a positive role in cultivating innovative awareness, cooperative spirit and project practice ability.

In an era of “Made in China 2025”, unprecedented flexibility is exhibited in industrial manufacture; innovative and applicative abilities are raised to a new height; manufacturing procedure is no longer an individual behavior in a single enterprise: vertical integration and end-to-end engineering digitalized integration are fully employed and consequently efficiency is improved unprecedentedly. All of the above change has put a even higher demand on technological talents. The aim of the contest is in accordance with the demand: improve the students’ ability in engineering practice and application; boost the students’ interest in engineering technology; cultivate innovative ability and cooperative spirit; enhance self-discipline and communicative skills; embody the concept of learning to meet practical needs.

Colorful “12 years’ birthday”

The central theme of the 12th contest is “intellectual manufacture combined with creativity and imagination and a future created by technology”. Three topics are included in the contest: servo follow-up control, industrial robots control and micro-grid control. Each participating group is to pick up one topic, build up the control system, and make executing object according to the technological requirement of the contest. The main contents of the contest are: basic test (5%), system design and debugging (90%) and civilized entry (5%). There are four prizes for the contest: first prize (15%), second prize(25%), third prize(40%) and enterprise special prize(one team).

The preparation work started from August 4th. To ensure the smooth carrying out of the contest, the diligent and polite volunteers were divided into groups of reception, catering service, logistics, conference affairs, etiquette, publicity, connection and maneuvering.
