Hu Dongsheng of Russian Major Gets the 2ndPlace in the 10thNational Interpretation Contest

On November 4, 2017, the 10thMultilingual National Interpretation Contest of “AEON Cup” was held inBeijingInternational Studies University. Hu Dongsheng, a senior student of Russian Major of School of Foreign Languages of HUST gets the 2nd place in Chinese-Russian consecutive interpreting contest. Since the first time our school participated in the competition in 2015, the results of our contestants continue to rise from the third prize in the 8thsession to the second prize in the 10thsession. All of these result from the hard work of the contestants and the long-term and steady training and guidance of young teacher tutors of Wang Huan and Tian Xinxin in Russian Major.

The “AEON Cup” Multilingual National Interpretation Contest is currently the highest level of interpretation competition in China. Co-sponsored by China Translation Association andBeijingInternational Studies University, the contestaims to further improve the quality of translators in colleges and universities and to achieve the interactive exchange and combination of translation teaching, translation studies and social translation practice. The event is divided into three stages: preliminary, rematch and finals, and classified in six languages as Japanese, French, German, Russian, Spanish, and Korean (North Korea). Among them, the Japanese component is divided into two types likes alternative interpretation and simultaneous interpretation, and the remaining five groups are alternately translated. In accordance with the rules of the competition, the competition is divided into two parts: foreign languages to Chinese interpreting and Chinese to foreign languages interpreting. The content of the interpretation covers politics, economy, culture and so on. When listening to the recordings, the contestants are asked to do thealternative interpreting or simultaneous interpretation in accordance with the rules of the competition.

99 contestants from 45 universities nationwide out of the preliminary contests held through internet entered the semi-finals. Contestants of Russian alternative interpreting group are mainly from 15 colleges and universities, such as Harbin University of Science and Technology, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Shanghai International Studies University, Sichuan International Studies University, Xi`an International Studies University, Dalian University of Foreign Languages, Tianjin Foreign Studies University, Nankai University, NKU, Xiamen University and so on, among which, Harbin University of Science and Technology is the only university of Sciences. After heated competition, Hu Dongsheng of HUST gets into first 6 contestants out of 15 and successfully pushes his way into the finals. In the finals, Hu Dongsheng makes excellent performance by showing his comprehensive capabilities of clarity, accuracy, confidence in interpreting.

In the closing ceremony and the awarding ceremony of the 10thMultilingual National Interpretation Contest, guests, judges and contestants from all languages gather together to highlight the strong desire of China to be more open to the world and to get closer relationship with other countries.
