School of Automation

Introduction of Automation Faculty

TheAutomationSchoolwas established in March, 2005.Now,the authorization of the first-level disciplines of master’s degree isthe “Control Science and Engineering”. Five sub-discipline master degrees are set up and they are“Control Theory and Control Engineering”, “Systems Engineering”, “Pattern Recognition and Intelligent Systems”, “Measurement Technology and Automatic Devices” and “Navigation, Guidance and Control”. One Master of Engineering master degree is the “Control Engineering”.Currently, there are1668 full-time undergraduates, 256 graduates, 241 engineering graduates, 12 doctoral students co-cultured with other disciplines and 7 postdoctors at the School. There are a total of 75 faculty members including five doctoral tutors, 26 professors, 14 academic leaders and back-up leaders, 30 postgraduate tutors, 33 teachers with doctor degree.

There are two key undergraduatedisciplines, respectively, the Automation major and Electronic Information Science and Technology major, in which Automation major was named the provincial key discipline in 2005, and the teaching team of Control Theory and Engineering major was namedHeilongjiangprovincial teaching team. Currently, the School has 20 teaching laboratories with a total area of2,500 square meters. The existing laboratory equipments were purchased in recent years, so they are reliable, practical, and suitable for training the practical ability of undergraduates and graduate students and developing new products. Graduates can be engaged in various work related to factories, enterprises, universities, IT industry, research institutes and government organs. The School has many college technological societies, such as Electronics Association and Robot Technology Community. In recent years, the employment rate of our graduates is high and has an upward trend. It has proved that automation major and electronic information science and technology major are greatly promising.

Since the establishment of the School, we have focused on scientific research anddiscipline construction.Control Theory and Engineering was named provincial key discipline. The School has Automation Technology Institute, Computer Information Technology Institute, Institute of Modern Control Technology,InstituteofPower Systems Automation, Robotics and Automation Technology Institute, and Automation Engineering System Institute. Currently, we undertake 973,863 national planning projects and more than 50 other projects, such as the National Doctoral Fund Project, Ministry of Education Key Fund Project, and the provincial and municipal planning projects, projects commissioned by enterprises. The total funds for the research projects are10.32 million Yuan. Since 2005, we have published a total of 579 high-level papers, including 205 papersembodied by thethree world-renowned science and technology document retrieval system (SCI, EI, ISTP) and CSCD. And we have acquired 18 research and teaching awards.

The Schoolhas long been keen to cultivate the foreign language and practical computer application abilities of undergraduate and graduate students, and has focused on combining teaching and research, theory and practice. We also work to make students own a solid theoretical foundation and extensive knowledge as well as make them the high-level talents who can independently engage in scientific research and design. Currently, we are actively reporting doctoral studies, and we believe that theAutomationSchoolwill achieve a qualitative leap in the near future.

Introduction of Automation Major

Automation Department of Harbin University of Science and Technology originated from the industrial automation major founded in 1974. According to theNationalCollegestructural adjustment policies, it was changed into the automatic control major in 1977. Then it was divided into automatic control and industrial automation majors in 1993 and merged into the current automation major in 1998, which has been Heilongjiang Provincial Key Discipline.

After thirty-year construction and development, the Automation major has achieved fruitful efforts in teaching and research, cultivated a large number of talented people for our country, and become an important research and development base for automation science and technology, and a cradle of automationspecialized talentsat all levels. It has played an important role in theChina's modernization.

The Automation major has currently 1,130 undergraduates and 44 professionals, including 16 professors, 20 associate professors (including senior engineers).

Specialized characteristics

The Automation major has a strong background of practical applications. Aerospace, aviation, transportation, electric power, manufacturing and other industries’ needs are the main driving force of automation disciplines’ birth and development. Automation technology is one of the symbols of the new and high technologies, and is an important interfaces and entry points for the application of information technology in traditional industries. It has played an important role in achieving national strategic objectives and developing the national economy by leaps and bounds. This major has significant research features and some theoretical and experimental technical level. It has formed distinct characteristics and advantages in control theory and application technology, intelligent control, pattern recognition and intelligent information fusion, intelligent instrument, multi-sensor information processing and other researches, and research achievements are outstanding.

This major mainly studies analog electronics, digital electronics, signal processing, automatic control systems, computer control technology, and other basic engineering technologies, to enable students to have good professional qualities and technologies, and have a good knowledge of the frontier disciplines and development trends in this major.

Introduction of the major

This major has a strong research team and a group of academic leaders, with active academic thinking and excellent academic qualities. In addition, some of them work as consultant or editors of important international and domestic academic journals and they have a certain academic status in our country. In personnel training, we have formed degreesin serial formand non-degree educational system, and cultivated a large number of outstanding professionals in automation engineering technology. Our graduates are of high quality with a good feedback from the society. So over these years, the employment rate of students has been in the front among the relevant majors.
