School of Chemistry and Environmental Engineering

Situated at the northern campus,SchoolofChemistryand Environmental Engineering of HUST was founded in 2002, with approximately 1447 full-time undergraduate students, 70 graduate students, 50 engineering master students, 12 doctoral students.

The School with proficient and energetic teaching staff possesses 65 teachers, including 4 doctoral supervisors, 19 master supervisors, 9 professors, and 35 associate professors, 23 of whom have doctor’s degree. One of the teachers has been selected for our college support program for academic leaders and two of them have been selected for our college development program for top-notch innovative talents. The School possesses 2 academic leaders and 4 reserved academic leaders of HUST. Meanwhile the School has invited a number of well-known scholars to be adjunct professors.

There are 4 specialties and 1 center in the School, which are Chemical Engineering and Technology, Material Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, Pharmaceutical Engineering, andLaboratoryCenter. The School set up the Provincial Key University Lab for Green Chemical Engineering andHeilongjiangBaihuiChemicalIndustryProductivityPromotionCenter.

With broad disciplines in the School, the fields of academic research cover chemical engineering, chemistry, material, environmental protection, biology, pharmacy. At present there are 4 undergraduate specialties including Chemical Engineering and Technology (provincial key discipline), Material Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, and Pharmaceutical Engineering, first level Master’s Degree Program in Chemical Engineering and Technology, Engineering Master’s Degree in the field of Chemical Engineering. Material specialty is entitled to enroll Doctoral students.

There is a building of over 10,000 square meters for teaching and experimenting, with a large number of experimental apparatus which are worth 16,000,000yuan, including the fundamental laboratories for Four Chemistry, comprehensive laboratories for each specialty, large-scale instrument analysis room, and computer simulation laboratory. The School has developed its particular research areas by doing a lot of works on production and application of fine chemical products, advanced organic synthesis, processing and utilization of agricultural and sideline products, organic functional materials preparation, cleaner production process, waste recycling, Advanced oxidation technology in water treatment, and preparation of nanomaterials.

The School put great emphasis on scientific research. Until now we have gained ten significant scientific achievements, including one 863 program, two Natural Science Foundation of China, one Youth Fund for Doctoral Program by Ministry of Education, and four Provincial Key Research Projects, as well as thirteen patents. Accumulated research funding has amounted to 5,500,000yuan. In recent years, the School teacher has published approximately 200 papers, 80 of which were indexed by SCI or EI. 3 monographs have been published. Four achievements have won provincial awards. We have built three groups for scientific research and renovation, which are in the field of applied chemical technology, function molecule design, and new technologies for pollution control.

The School highlights the central position of undergraduate teaching. The development of students integrated qualities, practice capabilities and creative abilities highly emphasized, to satisfy the social demands of interdisciplinary talents under the present circumstance. Some excellent undergraduate students with outstanding academic performance can be recommended for master’s degree without entrance examination. Guided by the Scientific Outlook on Development, the School is actively exploring to teach students in accordance with their aptitude to adapt the social development. The School is engaging in broadening the students’ horizon by cooperating with relative schools Harbin Institute of Technology, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Jilin University and Tianjin University for teaching and scientific research, and cooperating with Daqing Petrochemical Corp, Harbin Flax Mill, Daqing Petrochemical Plant, and Huatai Group for our teaching and practice base.

The School adopts new education concepts to cultivate our students, firmly establishing the ideology of “people first”, so as to create a sound and harmonious environment for teachers and students. Undergraduate programs

Introduction to Chemical Engineering and Technology

Chemical Engineering and Technology of HUST, the provincial key discipline, was founded in 1996.

We provide three specialties including chemical process, fine chemical products synthesis and process, and low-toxicity drugs.

The objectives of this major: to let the students grasp up-to-date basic theories of chemistry, experimental skills, basic principles and methods of chemical engineering and technology; to know the latest achievement and development in this field; to cultivate the students into advanced special qualified people with high adaptability, broad extension, and proficient language abilities and advanced engineering qualified people with a certain creative capabilities to work on development of chemical engineering and technology, production technology management and scientific research in the fields of design and development of chemical process, fine chemical engineering, and low-toxicity drugs.

Principal courses:inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, principles of chemical engineering, chemical reaction engineering, chemical engineering thermodynamics, chemical reaction dynamics, chemical engineering technology, chemical process design basis, industrial catalysis, Fine chemical products synthesis principle, principles and applications of computer, etc.

The department possesses an experienced teaching group of 12 teachers with rigorous academic attitude and high education, including 2 doctoral supervisor, 4 post graduate supervisor, 4 professors and 8 associate professors, among whom 4 teachers with doctoral degree and 2 PHD candidates are included.

The department has a favorable condition for teaching and research with modern teaching instruments and advanced analytical and testing equipments. We have done intensive research on chemical process design and equipment, Industrial catalyst synthesis, extraction, analysis and modification of humic acid, high heat resistance materials, dissection of fine chemical products, and quality analysis. We have directed and completed over 10 research products supported by the State Economic and Trade Commission, the State Education Commission, Ministry of Agriculture, Heilongjiang Provincial Department of Science and Technology, and Heilongjiang Provincial Department of Education. We have published more than 100 academic papers in both domestic and foreign periodicals.

The employment rate of our students keeps above 90%. Most of the students are employed by the petroleum enterprises, chemical enterprises, and chemical engineering designing institute (research institute) all over the nation. In recent years, foreign companies working on chemical industry and biological chemistry has gradually become another heating choice for our students.

The department can enroll post graduate students major in chemical technology and applied chemistry. The enrollment situation: 92 students in 2006;125 in2007; 130 students in 2008; 133 students in 2009.

Introduction to Materials Chemistry

Materials chemistry is set up for the necessity of study on materials science in 21 century. Materials chemistry is an emerging subject combined chemistry with materials science. Students focus one the basic theories and experimental skill on chemistry, chemical industry and materials science, capable of solving the problems including synthesis, preparation, production, composition, processing, application, and testing based on profound chemical theories and strong practical ability. It is aimed to cultivate our students as professionals with capabilities on research and development of new materials, strong experimental skills and scientific research ability, and proficient abilities on one foreign language and computer.

Principal courses: organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, structural chemistry, crystal chemistry, elementary chemical industry, materials physics, high polymer physics, fundamentals of materials science, material processing and moulding, material analysis and test methods, Polymer synthesis principle and process, organic synthesis principle and route design, Composite material design and preparation, the application of computer in material chemistry, etc.

The department possesses an experienced teaching group of 9 teachers with rigorous academic attitude and high education, including 2 doctoral supervisor, 4 post graduate supervisor, 2 professors and 6 associate professors, among whom 7 teachers with doctoral degree and 1 doctor candidate are included.

The department has a favorable condition for teaching and research with modern teaching instruments and advanced analytical and testing equipments. We have done intensive research in the field of functional polymeric material foundation theory, organic functional materials, nano-materials, hybrid material inorganic polymer materials, bio-medical materials, composite materials, material simulation.

We have directed and completed over 20 research products in the national, provincial, and municipal level. We have published more than 50 academic papers in both domestic and foreign periodicals, over 30 of which are indexed by SCI.

The department can enroll post graduate students major in materials physics and chemistry and applied chemistry.

Introduction to Environmental Engineering

Materials chemistry is set up for the necessity of study on materials science in 21st century. We provide three specialties including cleaner production technology, water pollution control engineering, and environmental impact assessment.

The objective of this specialty is: to make the students grasp fundamental principles and experimental methods of environmental engineering science, understand basic knowledge of applicable studies, know the latest achievement and the development in the field of environmental science and engineering, able to work on engineering design, implementation, research and development, management and teaching of environmental protection, pollution control, environmental monitoring, and water treatment engineering, so as to become the advanced professionals with high quality, creativity, and practical experiences in the field of environmental engineering.

Principal courses: physical chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry, principles of chemical engineering, environment engineering microbiology, environmental monitoring, water pollution control engineering, air pollution control engineering, solid waste treatment, environmental impact assessment environmental ecology, cleaner production technology, environmental planning and management, etc.

The department possesses an experienced teaching group of 9 teachers with rigorous academic attitude and high education. There are altogether 13 students, including 3 doctoral supervisor, 2 professors and 6 associate professors, among whom 6 teachers with doctoral degree and 3 doctor candidates are included.

The department has a favorable condition for teaching and research with modern teaching instruments and advanced analytical and testing equipments for water and air pollution control. We have done intensive research on the cleaner production of acrylamide, the preparation of new photochemical catalyst and photochemical aquatic hydrogen production, the engineering and technology of removal of nondegradable organic pollutants with advanced oxidization and wastewater treatment for Chinese medicine with biological process. We have directed and completed over 10 research products supported by theNatural Science Foundation of Heilongjiang Province, Harbin Key Projects, Projects ofEducation Department of Heilongjiang Province for young academic leaders, and Initial Funding for Postdoctoral Research. We have published more than 60 academic papers in both domestic and foreign periodicals, of which over 20 have been indexed by SCI and over 20 have been indexed by EI.

Our students can apply for postgraduate degree of the department major in chemical technology and applied chemistry.

Introduction to Pharmaceutical Engineering

Materials chemistry is set up for the necessity of study on chemical and pharmaceutical production and research in 21 century. We provide three specialties including chemical pharmaceutical technology, natural medicines development, and Biological pharmaceutical process.

The objective of this specialty is: to make the students as the advanced professionals in the field of pharmaceutical engineering with fundamental principles, knowledge, and operational skills of study, preparation and production of chemical drugs and natural drugs, who can work on the production, technical development, applicable research and operational management in the sectors including pharmacy, pesticides, food, fine chemical engineering, and biochemical engineering.

The graduates are expected to acquire the following knowledge and abilities:

1. To grasp the fundamental theories and basic knowledge of chemical pharmaceutical engineering, biopharmaceutical engineering, traditional Chinese medical science, and pharmaceutical technology and engineering;
