On 22 March, the China Higher Education Association released the 2023 National College Student Competition Rankings. Among the 2,472 universities on the list, Harbin University of Science and Technology ranked 127th, for eight consecutive years (2016-2023) ranking first among universities in Heilongjiang Province.
In February 2017, the Chinese Association of Higher Education launched the "Research on the Evaluation and Management System of University Competitions" project, which follows the principles of fairness, impartiality, and openness. Based on the statistics and calculations of the award-winning contributions, organizational contributions, and research contributions of each university, the national ranking list of ordinary university student competitions is released. This is the first list in China that focuses on the cultivation of innovative talents and subject competition results in universities, which has received widespread attention from all sectors of society. It has been released for eight consecutive rounds and is an important reference for measuring the quality of talent cultivation in universities.
For many years, HUST has focused on the fundamental task of cultivating morality and talents, attached great importance to innovation and entrepreneurship education, and continuously promoted the integration of innovation and entrepreneurship education into the entire process of talent cultivation. In 2023, with the core goal of enhancing the ability to cultivate innovative talents and guided by the integration of industry and education as well as the integration of science and education, various departments and schools collaborated in hosting 10 provincial-level and above subject competitions, and HUST organized more than 100 subject competitions for all teachers and students, and 2452 students received 993 provincial-level and above awards, achieving full coverage of student participation in subject competitions.
In 2023, with the orderly organization and strong promotion of the school, a series of breakthroughs followed one after another: the “Management Measures for Undergraduate Research-based Learning and Subject Competitions at Harbin University of Science and Technology (Trial)” (University Issued [2023] No. 44) and the “Construction Plan for Harbin University of Science and Technology Provincial Innovation and Entrepreneurship College (Trial)” (University Issued [2023] No. 104) and other related documents have been successively issued, and the full chain education path of “incubation of course competitions” has been established, providing institutional guarantees for the substantial breakthrough of innovation and entrepreneurship education. A team of innovative and entrepreneurial education teachers has been established through the collaboration of government, the university, and enterprises, and 7 specialized training sessions for innovative and entrepreneurial teachers have been carried out successively. We have established a course selection model for nearly 8,000 undergraduate/graduate students in the university to participate in cross-disciplinary innovation and entrepreneurship courses, and set up innovation and entrepreneurship MOOCs such as “New Era Innovation Competition Project Analysis” covering more than 40 subject competitions. Our university has a total of 1443 approved research and training programs and 722 innovation and entrepreneurship training programs for college students, for the first having a key project approved by the China Higher Education Association. We initiated the establishment of the University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Association, and fully put the training building of Harbin University of Science and Technology into use. In the China International College Students Innovation Competition, students from Harbin University of Science and Technology achieved iterative award-winning results of “one competition and three national awards” for the first time, achieving an original breakthrough of all three categories of projects being shortlisted for the university’s “National Innovation Annual Meeting”.
Currently, our university is still conducting on benchmarks and evaluating various indicators, actively promoting the further integration of innovation and entrepreneurship education with professional education, and striving to achieve greater results in the cultivation of innovative talents.
