The School of Automation organized its members of Youth League, Student Union, and Institute of Theory to participate in a series of social practices centered on “caring for left-behind children, sharing love and dedication”. These activities are in response to “Affection Given to Left-behind Children”—2017 plans to take care of left-behind children in Heilongjiang rural areas, a document issued by Heilongjiang Communist Youth League. According to the arrangements made by HUST Youth League, the School of Automation organized activities to help these children tackle practical problems. On July 11, 2017, a fund-raising event was held at the square of 1st Canteen, West Campus of HUST. Present at this event were Jia Hongyu, Automation School Secretary of CPC HUST, Xu Jiazhong, Dean of Automation School, Xu Yan, Automation School Deputy Secretary of CPC HUST.
According to the requirements specified by the document, the School of Automation paired up with 64 left-behind children in Tailai Village of Tailai County, Heilongjiang Province. Among these children, 20 come from divorced families, one child’s parents get separated, 2 come from single-parent families, and 2 children live with guardians who suffer from severe mental diseases. The event attracted a large number of teachers and students, who gave donations after being informed of the situation. The fund-raising event lasted for three days, with a total donation of 5,069.4 yuan. Hou Yuming, teacher from Security Department, will donate 1000 track suits. At the end of July, the group will head for Tailai Village to give the money and clothes to the children. The money will be given to those left-behind children who are underprivileged, disabled, and self-reliant.
The fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose. The fund-raising event was greeted with enthusiasm from teachers and students, leaders of the university and the school of automation, all of whom contributed to help these children. They wrote down encouraging words to the children: “Everyone has his or her values. No matter how hard life is, don’t stop pursuing your dreams”; “May you get to know how to be brave and strong; may you grow up safe and sound; may you make yourself useful in face of the future”; “Wish you a happy childhood and every success in the future”. Videos were also recorded to give their encouragement to the children.
Children are the hopes of the country. In order to help left-behind children enjoy a happy childhood like other children have, the school of automation will set up a “Four-level Caring System”, which includes care for their daily life, for their mental health, for their study and education, and for the parental companionship. The system of caring for their daily life is operated by helping children solve practical problems, thus creating a favorable environment for their growth. The system of caring for their mental health is aimed at keeping a record of their psychological well-being, forming a team led by instructors, and giving children psychological counselling through lecturing or games. The system of caring for their study and education is geared towards giving children lectures by using local schools and voluntary university students. Finally, the system of caring for parental companionship is centered for pairing up outstanding university students from Youth League, Student Union, Institute of Theory, and volunteers with left-behind children on a one-to-one basis, keeping the children company by establishing frequent contact with them through telephone, Internet, visits to their home or invitation to the university.
The School of Automation will continue the support for left-behind children in rural areas, with improved system and upgraded working mechanism. Services will be provided by distinctive volunteer groups. University students will be instructed to continue the service for the children, providing them with a healthy environment for future development. These activities will also help foster the well-rounded development of university students, which is expected to lead to a university-wide awareness on the students’ part of mustering positive youthful energies.
