2016 FLTRP Cup National English Speaking Competition of Heilongjiang Division was held in Mudanjiang Normal College on 22, October. The contestants from HUST, Liu Chunlin (supervised by Guo Hong), Xu Wenjing (supervised by Guan Ning) and Shi Jingwen (supervised by Yang Xin), won the second prize, third prize and third prize respectively. Jiang Yufeng, director of College Foreign Language Teaching Committee, director of HUST School of Foreign Languages, addressed in the beginning of the opening ceremony. Our foreign teacher James Ray was invited as one of the question masters. Some teachers, Li Changyi, Wang Rui, Xu Lei and Liu Ying, from our School of Foreign Languages watched the contest as observers. The competition was attached highly importance by the leaders from Teaching Affairs Office and Foreign Languages School.
The total number of contestants reached 55. They made 3 minutes speech on the theme of Communication is powerful. The procedures in the contest were prepared speech within 3 minutes and answer the two given questions based on the speech for 2 minutes. Using beautiful language, deep thought, elegant manner and fund of knowledge, the contestants interpreted the glamour of English speech.
Before the provincial contest, our university carried out the campus English speaking competition for almost 3 months. With the care and sponsor from Teaching Affairs Office and School of Foreign Languages, undertaken by Net English Club, the three contests were selected from hundreds of students through preliminary, quarter final and final round. As an effective extension of our English teaching and a practice base to foster students’ English abilities, English speaking contest helps to cultivate students’ critical thinking and comprehensive English abilities. It also shows great achievements of our English education.
