At nine p.m. of June 27th, an awarding ceremony for undergraduate students who had won prizes in the competitions concerning study, science and technology in 2011 was held in the multifunctional hall of No. 1 Building. Vice President Meng Dawei, Ge Baojun, Chen Deyun, Shao Junpeng, Qi Liangqun, Wang Junming, Academic Deans of all the schools, part of the excellent instructors as well as the representatives of students attended the ceremony. Song Qingkun presided over the conference.
Song Qingkun reviewed the competitions that our students participated in 2011. He said that the university authorities set high store by competitions concerning study, science and technology, for they are important means to foster the students’ innovative and researching capacity. Last year, 608 students won prizes above the provincial level, a new breakthrough which cannot be achieved without the concerted organization and coordination of Teaching Affairs Office and all the schools, as well as the instruction of teachers and the tenacity of students. These prizes gained great honor for our university and thus stimulated the development of scientific and technological innovation, and the reform of education and teaching. Song also mentioned that the publicity, organization and administration of competitions would be strengthened, so that more students could know about and take part in these competitions.
Director of Teaching Affairs Office, Professor Ge Baojun announced the list of excellent instructors and prize-winners who were later granted certificates by the university authorities. Outstanding Contribution Prize was awarded to Chen Dongyan for her long-term dedication and outstanding achievement in the competitions.
On behalf of all the awarded students, Qi Dalatu expressed his gratitude to the university for the opportunities to take part in the competitions. He also shared his experience for ACM competition, saying that practice makes perfect. Feng Fei also talked about his feelings toward mathematical modeling competition, saying that the competition would benefit him throughout his life. He also expressed his sincere thanks to his instructor for her patience and hard work, and to the university for offering the students an opportunity to realize their dream. As an excellent instructor who has worked many years on the instruction of mathematical modeling competition, Chen Dongyan said that the achievement in the competition would stimulate more teachers and students to get involved in the competition. She also shared her experience in instructing the competition.
Vice-president Meng Dawei sent his congratulations to the awarded students and their instructors; meanwhile, he thanked all the teachers and staff for their preparation, organization and involvement in the competition.
He also pointed out that competitions concerning the students’ study, science and technology could examine the students’ comprehensive ability in applying theory to practice and foster their ability of independent thinking as well as innovative awareness. As an important means for higher institutes to cultivate innovative talents, carrying out competitions is in accordance with the objective of fostering talent in the new era. The competitions would stimulate educational reform in our university, increase our educational level, gain higher reputation for us, and play a positive role in establishing a great academic atmosphere. The university authorities would continue to support the competitions, renew the equipment and improve conditions, so as to attract more participants. At last, Vice-president Meng Dawei concluded that an unforgettable experience would last for a lifetime in one’s mind; hopefully, the spirit of being perseverant, resolute and hardworking showed in the competition would accompany the students for a lifetime.
