On the afternoon of December 13, the 10thterm of our school’s Knowing and Doing Forum was held in the multi-function hall in the building 1 on the West Campus. Prof. Chen Bartel, the supervisor of the doctoral candidates in NKU, gave a special speech under the title of“How Does University of Cambridge Cultivate Science Elites from the Comparison between Chinese and Western Cultures?”Lu Yan the Deputy Secretary of Party Committee, Xiao Qingsheng the Minister of theDepartment of Publicity & United Front Work for CPC Committee, and the teaching faculty and student representatives from Foreign Language Department, International Cultural Education Department, Marxism Department, Art Department, Law Department, Higher Education Research Institution participated in this seminar. Wu Qiufeng the Undersecretary oftheDepartment of Publicity & United Front Work for CPC Committee hosted the Forum.
Wu Qiufeng introduced the purpose and significance of this forum, and said that it could enhance teachers’ and students’ humanistic quality, enrich campus academic culture, facilitate the dynamic integration between scientific spirit and humanistic spirit in universities of science and technology, construct a favourable cultural atmosphere for cultivating high-quality innovative talents. Prof. Chen’s lecture would have a significant referential effect on our university’s cultural construction and talent cultivation.
In the forum, Prof. Chen compared the four cultural circles which are East Asian Confucian Culture, South Asian Hinduism Culture, Islamism Culture and Christian Culture, took University of Cambridge as an example to introduce its long history and cultural origin and expounded howUniversity of Cambridge Cultivates Science Elites from macroscopic, madhyamika, microcosmic levels in cultural perspective. These three equilibrium mechanisms unfold from external and internal influencing factors. Lacking any one of these mechanisms, the system would be incomplete. University is an organism. Only each part of it is harmonious, united and balanced, and the whole school can function well.
After the report, conventioneers expressed that the reporter combined expertise, historicity and intellectual into the whole lecture and got enlightened from both knowledge level and spiritual level.
