On Apr. 28, ACFTU issued a decision on the recognition of May 1^stLabor Award, May 1^stLabor Medal and National Worker Pioneer. Prof. Liu Xianli in Mechanics Department was titled of the honor of May 1^stLabor Medal. On May Day Eve, Wang Yuehua who is the President of General Union and the secretary of Leading Party Group and Ci Jingyuan who is the member of Leading Party Group visited our university and Prof. Liu Xianlli and congratulated Prof. Liu and HUST. Liu Li, Provincial Educational Labor Union, represented ACFTU to award the medal and certificate of honor to Prof. Liu.

Prof. Liu is the Chief of National and Local United Project Laboratory on Efficient Cutting and Cutting Tool, Pace-setter in Scientific Research of Mechanical Engineering in Heilongjiang Province, Foregoer of Leading Personnel on Provincial Level, Special Term Professor of Long Jiang Scholar and gainer of Special Allowance of the State Council. Throughout several decades, he studies assiduously, contributes selflessly, takes students as his own kids, imparts knowledge and educates students, and is deeply loved by the students. Rooting in knife tool industry, Prof. Liu gave up favorable conditions abroad, doing research with great concentration, successively accomplished major special projects of national science and technology, national science and technology support projects, hundreds of projects of national funds and province and city scientific research projects. He solved more than ten technological problems for enterprises, brought remarkable economy benefit, and was awarded second class prize of Scientific and Technological Progress, National Invention Prize and eight provincial science and technology awards. He is taking the lead of the scientific research team, who is referred to as “the King of Cutter” by the trade union and makes our university’s machine manufacturing discipline own remarkable features in insisting on the traditional metal cutting theoretical research and the development of cutting-tool engineering technology which takes the leading position.

President Wang Yuehua said May 1^stLabour Medal is the glorious title which is offer by ACFTU to the labours who have made outstanding contributions to building socialism with Chinese characteristics and is one of the top honors for Chinese working class. Prof. Liu concentrates on the new technology studies with the iron man spirit to cultivate talents cautiously and conscientiously, and has proved himself to be the model of excellence in both performing skills and moral integrity in provincial education system. President Wang required the staff of education system of whole province to look to the example of Prof. Liu and then to carry forward model worker spirit, to cultivate and practice socialist core values, to make concerted effort, to work sound, to explore industriously, to practice bravely and to give full play to deepen the reform and promote scientific development.
