On July 2, hosted by the Provincial Education Department of Heilongjiang and jointly organized by Heilongjiang University as well as the Center for Overall Strategic Cooperation Innovation between China and Russia, the opening ceremony of 2014’s Sino–Russian University President Forum was held in Harbin, during the period of the first Sino-Russian Expo. Li Dayong, the president of HUST, was invited to attend the forum.

The forum was themed as “Cultivating Elite Talents to Meet the Needs of Overall Strategic Cooperation between China and Russia”, aiming at enhancing mutual understanding among high-leveled universities in both China and Russia, as well as promoting an overall communication and cooperation in education between the two countries.

There were altogether 31 presidents from universities or institutes, 18 of which were from Russia, includingSt. Petersburg State University, Moscow State Technical University Named After N.E Bauman,Tomsk Polytechnic University,Novosibirsk State Technical University, Pacific National University, Pushkin State Russian Language Institute, Far Eastern Federal University, Siberian Federal University, National University of Novosibirsk, and so on, invited to attend the forum upon invitation. As to the other 13 Chinese universities or institutes, besides HUST, there were also some high-leveled ones like Heilongjiang University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Tongji University, Ji Lin University, Xi’an Jiaotong University, Beijing Institute of Technology, etc.

Sun Dongsheng, vice governor of Heilongjiang province, Yu Jihai, deputy director of MOE’s International Cooperation & Communication Department, T.Y. Yuryevich, minister of the Russia Federation Embassy to PRC, and G.Y. Nikolayevich, deputy director of the International Department of Russia’s Edu.& Sci Ministry, attended the opening ceremony of the forum and delivered their own speech.

On the forum, President Li made a keynote address entitled as “Opportunity, Advantage, Quality, Cooperation”, and met with the presidents from some Russian universities or institutes, including his old friend, President I.S. Nikolayevich from Pacific National University, exchanging ideas on the prospects and exploring ways of further cooperation between both sides in the near future.

“A solid foundation was laid for HUST to start an overall cooperation with these high-leveled Russian universities or institutes in science research and education from the forum.” President Li remarked.
