As a graduate majored in Mechanical Engineering from HUST, Prof. Liu’s has endeavored in cutting tool study since 1980s, and achieved great success in researchingmetal cutting theory and cutting tool technology up to now, including a outcome taking the leading position internationally (hard cutting technology), dozens of completed projects and quite a few awards at the levels of country, ministry, province and so on. Every time a cutting tool problem occurs in China’s 1st Heavy Machinery Group Co., Ltd. when there is any major state project of heavy cutting being done, Liu will be communicated to solve it in the first time.

“Cutting tools are just like the teeth of machine tools. Without strong teeth, a machine tool should be useless however advanced it is. To develop China’s equipment manufacturing industry, we need manage to develop cutting tool industry at first,” Liu remarked. “Here I should pay my highest tribute to my predecessors in HUST who have devoted their whole life to cutting tool studies, esp.Prof. Li Zhenjia, my tutor who has not only guided me in my student hood but also helped me to pave the way for my further study in this field, with both his learning and his spirit. From Prof. Li, I learned the principle that there are no words like laziness or carelessness in scientific study. If I have achieved something, it’s the result that I am standing on his shoulder and I have determined to help all my students to stand on my own shoulder.”

“Xianli had ever been abroad for a long time to engaged in advanced studies twice and got many good opportunities to find jobs with much higher salary and morefavorable working conditionsthere, but he abandoned them and returned to HUST resolutely and determinedly to join in my team as soon as he got to know that we were carrying on several national researching projects and needed help.” Hearing Liu’s praise, Prof. Li Zhenjia answered with a sign.

“We have learned so much from Prof. Liu.” Every student tends to express so when starting to talk about his or her experience of working under the leading of Prof. Liu. If making them continue, we may hear various key words, but the common ones should be “fast-paced” and “beneficial”.

In fact, during the period between the ninth and tenth “five-year” plans of China, cutting tool industrysuffered depression. When more and more universities and institutes that engaged in it chose to seek new directions, Prof. Liu and his teammates decided to keep on. With the support of provincial government, they managed to fulfill more NSFC and enhance cooperation with enterprisers in both Heilongjiang and other provinces. Now the depression has gone away, his team has ranked among the most influential groups in world’s cutting tool industry, while he became “the King of Cutter” in this trade and was offered even higher-paid jobs by more universities and institutes. However, he turned down all of them politely but firmly.

“I’m only an average teacher and engineer who want to do sth. I like. I like to work in Heilongjiang, which is the largest base of equipment manufacturing industry in China, and I like to work in HUST, where I have a lot of space to grow up in my career, esp. a group of teachers, teammates, comrades and students to cooperate me to fulfill my dream.” Liu said.

Yes, Prof. Liu has his dream here, i.e. to build the National and Local United Project Laboratory on Efficient Cutting and Cutting Tool in HUST into one of the most well-known researching and developing base for cutting tool in the world, as well as a paradise of study and innovation for students at all levels.

Wearing the glitteringNational May 1st Labor Medalawarded by ACFTU, Prof. Liu didn’t show too much excitement, although the medal is indeed a great honor not only for himself but for HUST as well. He was just thinking over his following working schedule, and after flying back to Harbin, he dashed to his laboratory directly instead of going back home to have a rest at first. Then, after no more than a month, he spent such a dayas being in Changsha in the morning, flying to Xi’an at noon to stay there until the evening and flying to Beijing once again atnight so as to save enough time to attend an academic conference held in the following day.

On the wall ofProf. Liu’soffice, there is a horizontal calligraphy brand with Chinese Characters of “Gong Zhi Dao, Shi Wei Ben” (in English, it means “No solid work, no engineering progress”) . It was a gift presented by Hu Qiang, a postgraduate he tutored without any reservation from 2011 to 2014. We must confess that it embodies the core of Prof. Liu’s sense of value and can answer the question proposed at the beginning of this article: How was his National May 1st Labor Medal tempered?

“Professor Liu showed the ethos that every one in our university cherishes, i.e.be honest man and do solid work.”That is HUST’spresident Li Dayong’s idea on this question.
