On Nov. 13, Gong Qihuang who, the famous optical expert, the director of state key laboratory of artificial microstructure and mesoscopic physics, the distinguished professor of Yangtze River Scholar from Peking University, and the academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, gave a lecture at Harbin University of Science and Technology. The vice-president Professor Wei Xinlao met with Gong, expressed the warm welcome for his visit, and introduced briefly the development of our university. Those who accompanied were Wang Junming, dean of the School of Applied Sciences, Professor Yin Jinghua, the academic leader of electronic science and technology, Doctor Su Bo, Longjiang Chair Professor, Deng Caixia, the Secretary of the Party Committee of the School, and the Vice-dean Huang Jinzhe. Gong gave the lecture on Ultrafast Nonlinear Mesoscopic Optical Research, providing the new knowledge, new information and new ideas on the femtosecond laser technology in nonlinear optics research. This lecture was presided by professor Wang Junming, who is the dean of Applied Science School.

Gong graduated from the Physics Department at Peking University in 1983, and also got the doctor’s degree there in 1989. He does the research on nonlinear optics frontier and temporal and spatial small scale optical study. He carries out the systematic creative research in matter properties, new effect and application. His research published in the international authorized magazineNature Photonics, and he became the first Chinese who published a paper in this magazine. Gong published more than 300 papers, 16 authorized invention patents, and his paper was cited by SCI more than 2,400 times. He won the second prize of the National Natural Science in 2011, the Rao Yutai Physical Prize awarded by the Chinese Physical Society in 2005, the first Science and Technology Award in Beijing City, the Outstanding Young Scholar Award by Hong Kong Qiushi Technology Foundation in 1997 and the Wang Daheng Optical Award of China Optical Society in 1996. Now Gong is the academic leader of Innovative Research Group in National Natural Science Fund Committee and the chief scientist of the National Project 973.

The lecture began from the memory of our honorary president academician Wang Daheng. Academician Gong, based on the several years’ research experiences, gave a detailed explanation in the aspects of ultrafast optical research background, the establishment of femtosecond time-resolved measurement system, the improvement of the three-order nonlinear optical materials and ultrafast photonic device realization. In the interaction and communication with the students, the wide research thought impressed the teachers and students.

The lecture by Gong broadens the knowledge scope and widens the horizon for the teachers and students in HUST, providing the research thought and method for them. In addition, this lecture establishes a solid foundation for the further academic communication and cooperation. (Photographed by Zhang Liang)
