The year 2015 sees not only the 65th anniversary of HUST, but also the ceremony of the birth of HUST’s former president Wang Daheng, the famous academicianof Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, as well as the founding father of China’s optical industry and “two bombs & one satellite” (atomic bomb, hydrogen bomb and man-made satellite) project. To celebrate this special year, a series of commemorative activities were carried out inHUST, started with a conversazione and a twice-made public lecture organized bySchoolofApplied Sciencein late April.

The conversazione was held in Room 311, Building 3, on the afternoon of April 23, attended by all youth teachers from Mathematics Department and three top leaders of the Schoolof Applied Sciences, i.e. Dean Wang Junming, Branch Party Secretary Deng Caixia and Vice Dean Chen Dongyan. Party Secretary Deng hosted the conversazione, and introduced the life story and achievement of Academician Wang briefly, esp., his contributions to HUST since he was appointed as the presidents of HUST in April, 1978. She stressed as well the significance of cultivating youth teachers for higher education development, and encouraged the youth teachers presented todevelop and expand the lofty spirits ofAcademician Wang to perfect themselves. Dean Wang also delivered his earnest expectancy and encouragement to the youth teachers presented, and informed them the corresponding policies newly-established by both HUST andSchoolofApplied Science.

The twice-made public lecture was themed as “The Everlasting Spirit of Wang Daheng”, held in Hall0220 of Building 1,on the morning of April 26th, by Professor Yin Jinghua, the former branch Party secretary, doctorial tutor and academic leader ofSchoolofApplied Science, as well as one of Academician Wang’s colleagues. Besides the teachers and students from Schoolof Applied Science, including Chen Dinan, the vice branch Party secretary, students of HUST’s “Daheng Class” attended the lecture, in which Professor Yin illustrated the Spirits of Wang Daheng from five perspectives, namely, as a strategic scientist, as a top specialist, as a tireless educator, as a model grandmaster and as the founding father of Chinese Optical Society, with vivid descriptions and sensational narrations.
