On March 22, the final of the Sixth Session of the National Undergraduate Mathematical Contest, sponsored by Chinese Mathematical Society, was successfully concluded in Wuhan Huazhong University of Science and Technology. There were 297 undergraduates reaching the final, who were from hundreds of universities, such asPekingUniversity,TsinghuaUniversity,FudanUniversity,TongjiUniversity. Mr. Zhao Yang, an undergraduate from Grade 2011, major of Measurement and Control Technology and Instrument, was ranked the 83rdamong the 179 contestants in the nonprofessional mathematical group. Besides, he won the national second prize in the competition.

On Aug. 27, 2014, the training for undergraduate mathematical contest initiated, which was supported by our leaders, and organized by Academic Affairs Office. Eight teachers from Department of Applied Mathematics fromSchoolofApplied Scienceparticipated in the enrollment, preliminary screening, providing guidance in training and so on. In our university, thousands of students enrolled online. As a result, 370 winners, from the annual Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in HUST, took part in the Sixth Session of the National Undergraduate Mathematical Contest, among whom 340 students were nonprofessional mathematics, and 30 were professional mathematics. From Sep. 25, the tutorial team, which was formed by experienced mathematical teachers, provided patient, detailed, and tactical training to the contestants during one month, and we achieved excellent results.

On Oct. 24, 2014, HUST won the second place, just after HIT, in the Undergraduate Mathematical Contest inHeilongjiangProvince, the preliminary contest of the Sixth Session of the National Undergraduate Mathematical Contest. In the national preliminary contests, 24 students from our university received the first prize, 50 students received the second prize, and 71 students received the third prize. Moreover, in the provincial contests, 83 students received the first prize, and 35 students received the second prize. In total, 263 award-winning students covered 71.08% of the winning rate, who were from almost all majors studying mathematics. On Jan. 3rd, 2015, HUST gained the Outstanding Organization Award inHeilongjiangProvinceduring the award-giving meeting of the Sixth Session of the National Undergraduate Mathematical Contest.

As a high-level contest for undergraduate students, the National Undergraduate Mathematical Contest had become one of the most influential competitions with the largest number of contestants. Mathematical contests not only stimulated the interest of college students to learn mathematics, to provide a stage for young learners to show the mathematical basic skills, but also discovered, selected and cultivated excellent mathematical talents, and promoted the reform and development of the construction of mathematical curriculum in university.
