Today is a remarkable day. On this day, we wave goodbye to 2014, fruitfully; on this day, we look forward to the coming of 2015, hopefully. On behalf of HUST, I would like to take this special opportunity to extend my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to all who are working or studying in this university, and all who have been offering their concern and support to thisuniversity forthe New Year!
In Chinese lunar calendar, the major part of 2014 belongs to the Year of Horse, while the development of HUST in this year was just as fast as a galloping horse. During this year, under the guidance of corresponding spirit of the 18th National Congress of the CPC and its 3rd and 4th sessions, HUST kept on making landmark achievements in promoting the construction of modern university system and deepening the reform of internal management mechanism.
The last year saw a further consolidation of talent cultivation as the core work in HUST and the overall launch of student-oriented educational reform here. One national experimental teaching demonstration center, two national elite video publiccoursesand three undergraduate majors were newly set up, while four textbooks edited by HUST teachers were adopted as China’s “12th five year planning” undergraduate textbooks. The formulation of 2015’s HUST Undergraduate Training Plan offered a glimpse of a “new normal” educational system for us. With more and more provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities (altogether 10 up to now) authorizing HUST as their first group recruiting universities, we tend to have increasingly better chances to enroll outstanding freshmen.
The last year saw great progress of HUST in scientific research. After 2012 and 2013, we successfully declared key national natural science foundation sponsoring projects for the third time; our Key State Laboratory Breeding Base of “Dielectric Project” was graded as “excellence” in the national inspection; ourCollaborative Innovation Centre of 2011 “advanced Electric Equipment Manufacturing and Intelligent operation” won provincial certification; our National University Science Park was identified as national demonstration agency for technological industrialization, whose operating mode and potential got high appreciation of the leaders from provincial government; our National High-tech Business Incubators was appraised as the only class-A incubator in Heilongjiang province.
The last year saw great progress of HUST in construction in disciplineand teaching staff. A new post-doctorial research station was established in HUST, which also marked an overall coverage of post-doctoral research station for our first-leveled doctoral disciplines. 40 new teachers, including 34 who have PhD degrees, were recruited as full-time teachers while among teachers in-service,14 won chances to pursue PhD degrees, 8 to work in post-doctorial research stations, and 28 to further studies as visiting scholars, including Hu Jun, who was granted an interview to Mr. Joachim Gauck, Germany’s President, as a Humboldt Research Fellowship recipient.
The last year saw great progress of HUST inadministration reform. On the principle of “Objectivity and Fairness”, we fulfilled two difficult jobs: downsizing internal institutions and reappointing cadres at section levels. All reforms were carried out in a smooth and orderly atmosphere, which resulted in a more efficient management system (internal institutions downsized from 63 to 47, whereas the number of cadres at section levels decreased from 88 to 69) as well as a stronger cadre’s guarantee for the further development of our university.
The last year saw great progress of HUST in her staff livelihood and benefits. With the implementation of “Revised Allowance Allocation Plan”, the average campus allowance of HUSTworking staffmembers increased by 51%. With the bid and construction of the teachers’ apartment project, the largest scale of housing allotment in HUST’s history accomplished successfully. With most of working staff members’ making their satisfactory choice in the housing allotment, a complex having once ground our brains for over a dozen years was solved completely. Besides, thanks to the efforts of every condition security department, we overcame the bottleneck of limited budget, and were ensured enough money to keep the university running normally and pay ourselves campus allowance, esp. the replacement allowance issued by provincial government, timely. Campus security and environment improved gradually, so did the satisfaction rating of both teachers and students.
The last year saw great progress of HUST in external cooperation home and abroad. With six new high-leveled overseas universities becoming our new cooperative partners, HUST teachers and students are likely to have more choices when they need to study abroad or seek cooperative researching partners. After full preparation, HUST is going to rank in the SASTIND-Heilongjiang jointly constructed universities soon. With the innovation of alumni work, a grand and profitable university-enterprise cooperation network is coming into being soon, too.
All the above achievements were made through the joint efforts and everlasting supports from you, my respectable colleagues and students, alumni and friends, against the negative impact of unexpected MBA scandal at the beginning of 2014. I’d like to naming it HUST spirit, a spirit that can unite us as one giant who can always stand straight even in front of the most dreadful adversities and spare no effort to deliver positive energy to others so as to create our best HUST!
Do you remember Shelley’s famous word, “If winter comes, can spring be afar?” It’s my luck to have ever been with you during one of the coldest winters in HUST’s history, and I do believe a more colorful and beautiful spring is on the way to us, as long as I with you! Yes, I do believe!
The upcoming 2015 is the last year for us to promote “the 12th five year” planning for HUST, as well as the 65th anniversary of HUST and the 100th birth anniversary of Academician Wang Daheng, our honorable late president, awaiting us to make new progress in our glorious career of building HUST into a high-leveled university with “people’s satisfaction, social recognition, and everybody’s admiration”!
Dear comrades, time and tide wait for no man. Let’s review the culture guidance of HUST centered on the idea of “being honest man & doing solid work” and “advocating knowledge & adoring scholars”, seize this opportunities, ride this tide, and unite our persistent endeavor to strive for the new brilliance definitely belonging to HUST in her extraordinary 2015!
Last but not least, may everyone have a happy New Year, a happy family, good luck and good health!
