On the afternoon of April 28, a report was held in the Lecture Hall on the fifth floor ofHUSTNewTeachingBuilding, West Campus, featured with a lecture given by Liu Xianjun from Huazhong University of Science and Technology. HUST’s whole leadership, doctoral supervisors, disipline leaders, democratis parties principals, deans, Party branch secretaries, etc., attended the lecture.

Professor Liu has once been vice Party secretary and Education & Research Institute chief of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and is now a doctoral supervisor, the chief editor of the journalHigher Education Study, as well as the deputy director of Academic Committee and dean ofWenhuaSchoolthere. He also moonlighted as the chief of Chinese Society for the Study of Colleges, vice director of CAHE Academic Committee, consultant of National Undergraduate’s Cultural & Quality Education Steering Committee and director of HAHE Academic Committee,Hubei, etc.

The report was hosted by HUST vice Party Secretary Lu Yan, who stressed that the lecture should be of a profound significance in guiding HUST’s current work and future development, after introduced Professor Liu and the job objectives newly established by HUST.

Based on his long-term study, Professor Liu wrote prolifically on university-running ideas, strategic management, discipline construction, construction of teaching staff, etc., including 18 treatises and some 200 papers, as well as plenty of awards at different levels. In this lecture titled “On Characteristics, Methods and Goals of University Governance”, Professor Liu illustrated the characteristics, methods and goals of university governance from three perspectives, i.e. self-governance, cooperative governance and skilled governance, under the background of carrying out the spirits promoted by the 3rd and 4th sessions of the 18th NPC on higher education reform, which enlighted the audience greatly and provided a lot of references for HUST to improve her capacity in university governance and enhance her level of running schools by law.
