On August 24, the finals of “Donghua Science and Technology—Mitsui Chemicals Cup” The Ninth Chemical Engineering Design Competition were held in Tianjin University. The competition was sponsored by Chemical Industry and Engineering Society of China, Chinese Education Association of Chemical Industry, Chemical Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education. More than 1,000 teams from 238 universities attended the competition and 920 teams submitted their works. The competition included preliminary contests and finals. The preliminary contests were held in seven zones including East China, South China, North China, Central China, Northwest China, Southwest China and Northeast China.
Professor Zhang Guiling, Vice President of Chemical Engineering Institute, attached much weight to the competition through arranging special classrooms and organizing students to participate in the competition. Three teams, Team Victory, Team Hisashi Mitsui and Team Starlight, attended the competition under the direction of Professor Pei Lei, Guo Ying, Wang Hong and Yu Hong. Through Five months of hard work and repeated modifying, the three teams designed respectively process flow and equipment of 150,000, 200,000 and 250,000 tons of chemical products to achieve excellent results. On July 27, Professor Sun Xiaojun, Dean of Chemical Engineering Institute, leaded the teams to take part in the provincial competition held in Heilongjiang University of Science and Technology. Eventually, three teams won the first prize twice and the second prize once through keen competition. Later Team Victory stood for HUST to attend the finals in Northeast China. All team members tried their best to compete. Finally they won the Special Prize and were on the brink of promotion to the national finals. There were 48 teams from 48 universities in the national finals, including Zhejiang University, Tianjin University, Sichuan University, East China University of Science, Northwest University, Xiamen University, Dalian University of Technology and other universities. Through keen competition, Team Victory won national first prize to gain honor for our university.
The list of winners was as follows:
National First Prize: Team Victory (Du Yangxu, Lu Meng, Wang Ning, Li Fangyuan, Zhao Xiaoju)
Provincial First Prize: Team Hisashi Mitsui (Wang Yueqing, Zhang Yijing, Huo Yao, Jiao Junjun, An Zhenhai)
Provincial Second Prize: Team Starlight (Yi Liang, Su Baokun, Hu Lingjuan, Yuan Haixu, Zhuo Shangqiong)
The National Chemical Engineering Design Competition was a chemical professional event with most influence and highest engineering technical level. Among the judges, some were experts from National Institute of Chemical Engineering Design. Participants should own not only higher theoretical knowledge, but also certain engineering practice ability. Moreover, they had to work hard during the long competition. During the competition, students were required to have higher professional design level to design the drafts, use simulation software, design process flow and write documents. The competition could test students’ comprehensive use of knowledge and teaching quality of the institute. Through the Chemical Engineering Design Competition, the construction of the style of study would be promoted, and students’ innovation and practical ability would be improved. Eventually Institute of Chemical Engineering would become the cradle for excellent engineers.

Professor Sun Xiaojun, Dean of Chemical Engineering Institute, led the students to participate in the competition.
