2015 National Mathematical Modeling Contest was held from Sep. 11 to Sep. 14. Sixty-five teams from our university participated this event. We won five national second prizes, 27 Heilongjiang provincial first prizes, 23 Heilongjiang provincial second prizes and one Heilongjiang provincial third prize. The prize proportion reaches 86%. The great achievements attribute to the supervisors’ endeavors and the competitors’ efforts.
The students were active in participating this competition. 195 candidates were chosen among 405 students after the process of application, summer holiday tutoring and pre-contest selection. The candidates number increased by 62% compared with last year. The candidates were from 25 majors of our university, including students from freshmen to seniors.
Some new requirements were added in this contest: all supervisors and competitors should apply for the contest and hand in their papers through the Internet. The plagiarism check was also applied to all competitors’ papers. In order to face this new change, the tutoring schemes were rescheduled within the summer vocation tutoring. The supervisors emphasize more on fostering our candidates’ sense of responsibility, self-learning ability and teamwork innovation. The tutoring process increased the students’ ability of practical problem solving. It was the joint efforts of our students and supervisors to make our 65 teams fulfill their tasks in the contest.
With the support of HUST teaching affairs office, the Mathematical Modeling Contest is held in our university every year. The passion for mathematical modeling was highly motivated by the related activities. It also contributes a lot to the students’ innovation cultivation. We hope the students in our university can take full advantage of this platform and make greater achievements in the future.
