On August 23, after 4 day’s fierce competition, the 6thCUPT (China Undergraduate Physicists’ Tournament) came to a successful end in NUDT,Changsha. Among 49 delegations from 48 Chinese colleges and universities, including some sponsored by “211”and “985”construction projects such as THU, FDU, Zhejiang Univisity, etc., HUST delegation ranked30 intotal grade, with Yan Xinrui, as the only girl student in it, from Class 13-1 of Material Physics, School of Applied Science, winning the Award of Best Female Contestant.
CUPT is a national physics contest in China, imitated the pattern of IYPT (International Youth Physical Tournament), i.e. with team as the basic competing unit, aiming to test the contestants’ sense and ability of innovation, spirit of teamwork as well as practical capacity. Under the support of MOE, it turns to be one of the most important events in implementingThe Guidelines of the National Program for Medium- and Long-Term Educational Reform and Development.
In HUST, tryouts for CUPT have been held for three years in success. Thanks to the positive publicity and vigorous support from the leading staff of university, Department of Teaching Affairs and School of Applied Science, the participants have increased from 200 in 40 teams of 3 schools to 750 in 130 teams of 10 schools, and in the last three years, the winners won quite a few awards in Heilongjiang Undergraduate Physicists’ Tournament and CUPT. Now the HUST tryout for CUPT has become a remarkable platform for HUST students to promote academic communications and exchange innovative ideas in physics.
In terms of CUPT regulation, every college or university can only appoint one delegation of 5 contestants to run for tournament. In this year’s event, besides Yang, there are also Lang Changpeng from Class 12-2 of Photoelectricity Information, Sun Tao from Class Inorganic Material, Zhao Yue from Polymer 13-1and Wang Baobin from Machinery 13-8. All of them quitted their winter and summer vacation to take intensified assembly training. With the guidance of He Lijuan, Chen Chuntian, Yang Wenlong and other advisors from School of Applied Science, they have made sufficient preparation and succeeded in winning the 6th CUPT jury’s high praise with their wonderfully behaviors.
