On the afternoon of Sept. 16, the Commemorative Meeting of the 100th Birthday Anniversary for Wang Daheng, HUST’s late former President and CAE & CAS academician, was held in Room 1012 of theMainTeachingBuilding, West Campus. Professor Zhou Liwei, a BIT doctoral supervisor and CAE academician, as well as Wang Shurong and Xie Jijiang, two of CASCIOMP researchers and HUST alumni in Grade 1979, were invited as speakers to make reports on President Wang’s achievements and ideology.
As a famous expert in electronic optics & optical imaging and the founder of broad beam electron optical school inChina, Professor Zhou has ever worked with President Wang for more than 20 years. In his lecture entitled “Wang Daheng: a Banner of China’s Optics”, he spoke highly of President Wang’s glorious life from his great achievements, scientific outlook, scientific practice and broad view, and encouraged the audience to inherit and carry forward “Daheng Spirit”, i.e. devotion, exploration, innovation and teamwork, and keep on break new ground in their career.
As President Wang’s former students, Wang Shurong and Xie Jijiang also spoke highly of his noble personality, and recalled their experiences with him in HUST some 30 years ago. They introduced their own achievements in professional careers, under the direct and spiritual guideline of President Wang.
As one of a series of President Wang’s 100th Birthday Anniversary commemorative activities, the meeting lasted 3 hours and all seats in the room were occupied. The speech of Professor Zhou and two alumni moved the audiences so deeply that bursts of applauses could be heard from time to time.
Thecommemorative meetingwas hosted by Wang Junming, dean of HUST’sSchool of Applied Science, who made a summary speech to deliver his heartfelt gratitude for the three distinguished guests, and believed that all teachers and students in the school should be benefited a lot from their reports and work harder under the guideline of “Daheng Spirit” for China’s science development.
