What a September! What a season! We meet in HUST! We meet in a harvesting autumn!
I like this harvesting autumn, and I’m sure that the whole staff of HUST like this harvesting autumn as well, because in it, HUST harvests over 7,000 freshmen, which means not only the thriving vitality in the following four years, but also proves the solid confidence in HUST from over 7,000 families.
So now, as the president of HUST I must say “welcome” for your arrival”, and I must say “thank you” for your choosing HUST. Also, I must extend my sincere respect to your parents, and make a promise on behalf of 3000 HUST working staff members, that we will always live up to your parents’ expectations, we will treat everyone of you as our own children, and we will try our best to create satisfactory surroundings for you to live and study here so that you can grow up healthily and smoothly through the following four years—the most meaningful, brilliant and unforgettable time in your lives!
It is the second week since your arrival, isn’t it? How about your feelings toward HUST? Do you feel a little sorry for its not looking so marvelous or splendid? Are you puzzled about what a confidence HUST have kept to enroll freshmen with such a high NCEE grade? Do you wonder at what HUST can give you during the following four years? I hope you could find the keys to all these questions from the speeches made by our teachers’ representative, undergraduates’ representative and parents’ representative, or you could get them by yourself gradually in future！
Yes, HUST is not sponsored by “211”or “985”construction projects, but no one can deny her outstanding contribution to our nation’s strategic demand and local economic development. This year sees the 65th anniversary of HUST’s establishment and the 100th Birthday Anniversary for Wang Daheng, our late former President and CAE & CAS academician, as well as the honorable medal winner for developing China’s first atomic & hydrogen bombs and man-made satellites. This year also sees the 20th anniversary of the HUST founded from three distinctive institutes of long history and profound heritages.When celebrating or commemorating these special days, we cannot help to arising our heartfelt pride for the great achievements we have achieved. Five historical leap-forward developments are only symbolic ones. What is really worth mentioning, however, is the quality of graduates we cultivated throughout these years. Under the guidelines of HUST motto, i.e. knowing means practicing, more than a dozen thousand alumni reaped what they needed from here and devoted their whole lives to the construction of our homeland in every part of China, no matter whether their posts are noble or humble, which was, is and will be adding the value and honors to the brand of their Alma mater.
Of course, in every year’s graduation season, while sharing the joy and success of most graduates, we are always feeling sorry for knowing some frustrated ones who have long neglected their studies and inevitably end up with losing their opportunities to realize their best dreams. Yes, attitude is everything, and different attitudes doom to result in different lives. HUST is only a port for you to berth four years, neither too long nor too short. If you don’t seize the day steadfastly here and now, we can hardly imagine you can exalt “price matched” diploma with remarkable grades in four years.
I’m glad to hear the wonderful speech made by our respectable freshmen’s representative, which should represents the ideas of most of you. But I still want to remind you that action is louder than speech forever. What you need do is to transfer words into actions. Then some day you are qualified to say “HUST was my pride yesterday, whereas I am the pride of HUST today”!
I hope you can, during the following four years, in HUST, at least, manage to learn how to study, how to think, how to read, how to conduct yourselves, how to handle affairs, and most importantly, how to live a brilliant live! Only then, are you qualified to be satisfied with by yourself, be proud of by your family, and be useful to the society. Only then, are you ready to get married and start your career after graduation. Only then, are you qualified to be a real HUST family member!
My dear young friends，you are enrolled in HUST now. Are you ready to experience the brand new lives here indeed? I do believe you are. Yes，I do believe!
