Recently, the results of 2016 National College Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM/ICM) were publicized. Seventy percent of HUST’s contestants were announced to have been awarded, including 21 Meritorious Winners, 78 Honorable Mentions and 39 Successful Participants.
As one of the most famous annual international contests for college students and the originator of mathematical competition in modeling, MCM/ICM is prone to test contestants’ innovation ability and sense of teamwork more reasonably, which makes it a criterion for many well-known research institutions and enterprises at both home and abroad to measure undergraduate’s quality or degree of education. In 2016, the problems of contests changed a lot from those of previous years and seemed more difficult or challengeable. However, there were still 12446 teams from all over the world participating in it.
HUST always shows great enthusiasm in MCM/ICM, and selected 141 undergraduates in 15 majors (of both the Main Campus and Rongcheng Campus) to make up 47 teams (3 for each) for this year’s competition, all of whom underwent a 18-day intensified training under the direction of their faculty advisors, all of whom are experienced HUST teachers in MCM/ICM training.
After the strict training from the very beginning of their winter vacation in both English reading & writing ability and professional knowledge of MCM/ICM, all HUST contestants participated in the competition from Jan. 29 to Feb. 2. By working hard together for 96 hours in succession, they overcame numerous difficult problems, fulfilled their competition successfully and won new honor to their Alma Mater.
