On June 5, led by President Li Dayong, a HUST delegation arrived in Shanghai, and with the accompany of Liu Fenglong, the Chairman of Shanghai Alumni Association as well as one of HUST students of Grade 1983 majoring in Electronic Engineering, made a survey to SECRI.

Established in 1957 as a first class national R&D institution, SECRI, or Shanghai Electric Cable Research Institute, was now the only R&D institution integrated the research, development, design, testing, information exhibition service and industrial work of wire and cable engineering. With nearly 400 employees, including one CAE academician and over 80 professors and senior engineers, it also has one of the strongest working team in China’s wire and cable industry, and most of its outcome come up to the advanced domestic levels, many even filling domestic blanks or initiating new areas for the growth of China’s wire and cable industry.

SECRI’s Superintendent Wei Dong (also one of HUST students of Grade 1979 majored in Insulation Material) and Vice Superintendent Gao Feng (also one of HUST students of Grade 1980 majored in Insulation Technology) interviewed the delegation, together with SECRI’s Director Ding Weixia from General Office (also one of HUST students of Grade 1989 majored in Electric Engineering) and Director Liu Bin for Cadres Personnel Service.

President Li and his entourage, including Chen Qingguo, dean from School of Electric and Electronic Engineering, Song Qingkun, standing deputy director from Department of Teaching Affairs, Wang Qi, vice director for Enrollment & Allocation Affairs as well as director for Alumni Affairs, etc, visited Museum of China Wire & Cable’s Technology established by SECRI at first. After getting an overall impression on the growing trend of Wire & Cable Industry at both home and abroad, esp., the status and achievements made by SECRI as well as the contribution HUST graduates have made in Wire & Cable Industry during the last decades, the delegation visited SECRI’s open-door testing ground and High Voltage Lab, which takes a lead in China’s Wire & Cable Industry, guided by Superintendent Wei, whose excellent introduction vividly showed the forefront line and manpower demand in today’s wire & cable industry.

Having made a field survey and through communication for half a day, the delegates held a special meeting with SECRI leaders, and tentative agreements were reached on cooperation between HUST and SECRI in talent cultivation for both undergraduates and postgraduates, sharing resources, esp., superiority resources, and shaping a brand specialty in Wire & Cable Industry, etc.

President Li spoke highly of the prospect for the cooperation between HUST and SECRI, and delivered his sincere welcome to Superintendent Wei and other HUST alumni in SECRI to pay visits back to their Alma Mater as soon as possible.

The visit to SECRI was an important initiative of HUST in opening her 13th five year plan to further the reform of talent cultivation mode, promote the industry-university integration, and strive for more resources from her alumni to propel HUST’s development. More measures will be made by School of Electric and Electronic Engineering to carry out the substantial cooperation.
