Introduction toSchoolofMaterialScience and Engineering
In 1998, the former Electrical Material Department and Material Science Department merged, constitutingSchoolofMaterial Scienceand Engineer. The School is composed of Polymer Materials Department,Metallic MaterialsDepartment,Molding Control Engineer Department, Inorganic Materials Engineer Department and Analysis andTestingCenter. It has a total faculty of 89 teachers out of whom 7 are doctor supervisors, 34 are master supervisors, 25 are doctors and 22 are doctoral candidates, one is granted the title of “Provincial Scholar”, and one is included into the “Talent Project in the New Millennium” of national level. Among the faculty below 45 years old, doctors and doctor candidates account for 87.7%. There are 1767 undergraduate students, 188 graduate students and post graduate students.
The School has four undergraduate specialties: Polymer Materials and Engineer (national featured discipline),Metallic MaterialsEngineer (national featured discipline),Molding Control Engineer (provincialkey discipline), and Inorganic Materials Engineer. The discipline of Material Science is authorized to grant Doctor’s Degree and possesses Center for Post-doctoral Studies. Material Science, Material Procession, Polymer Chemistry and Physics, Material Physics and Chemistry, High Voltage and Insulation Technology (new insulation material direction) are Master’s Degree Granting Disciplines, which are also entitled to grant Master of Engineering and authorized to cultivate and grant Master Degree for university teachers in Material Science. The academic strength of the school embodies in its featured disciplines and key labs---Material Science and Material Physics and Chemistry (provincial key disciplines), Equipment Manufacturing Technology (provincial key discipline group), Aluminum and Magnesium Alloy Lab (provincial key lab), Material Research and Application Lab (key provincial university lab).
The school enjoys advanced teaching, research and testing facilities. Large-size apparatus and instrument includescanningelectronmicroscope,X-Ray diffractomer,FT-IR spectrometer, digital metallographic microscope,direct-readingspectrometer,Gel permeation chromatograph, providing favorable conditions for academic research and teaching.
Great importance has been attached to the academic exchange and cooperation with experts at home and abroad. The School has established academic exchange and long-term cooperation with universities and research centers inJapan, theUK,Holland,Germany,ItalyandAustralia; international renowned professors are invited to be guest professors; teachers are sent to the foreign countries for further study, visit and academic exchange. The school also commits to serving the local economy through cooperating with China First Heavy Machinery Group Corporation, Hafei group, Dongan Group and Harbin Bearing Group.
Outstanding success has been achieved in the research of polymer electrolyte materials, polymer matrix composite materials, fast detection and optimization control of metal material quality, casting of nodular iron with thick section, light alloy material and manufacturing process, ceramicmaterial, precision welding material, optical fiber and cable material, CAD moulding and numerical simulation technology. Since 2003, it has undertaken 110 projects of national, provincial and bureau level in which one received the National Award for Science and Technology Progress (rank 2nd), one was granted the Award for Science and Technology Progress of Education Administry (rank 1st), thirteen were awarded with Provincial Award of Scientific Research Advancement, and ten projects patented. Projects supported by National Natural Science Foundation amount to 10; there are also more than 30 provincial and bureau level projects under research with a total contract value of RMB13,646,000. With scientific educating theory,SchoolofMaterial Scienceand Engineer exerts every effort to develop into the nationally renownedMaterialScienceSchool.
