The New School of Foreign Languages was established in October, 2008, combining former Foreign Languages School, which was founded in June 2004, and former Foreign Languages Teaching Department. Now we have departments of English, Japanese, Russian, Korean, departments of CFT I, CFT II, CFT III, department of Graduate Students, Child-language Research Center, and Languages Center, among which there are four undergraduate programs as English, Japanese, Russian, and Korean Languages, one postgraduate authorized discipline as Foreign Languages and Literatures, four research directions as Linguistics, Foreign Literature, Foreign Languages Education, and Scientific Translation, and two newly-increased postgraduate programs as English and Japanese MTI, which includes two research directions as written translation and oral interpretation.
School of Foreign Languages has 185 faculty members, among which 172 are full time teachers, including 17 professors, 59 associate professors, 23 supervisors of postgraduates. There are also 7 who have got doctor degree, 13 who are now working on PhD programs, and 54 who have the experience of studying abroad. Meanwhile, 15 foreign teachers from the United States, Britain, Canada, Japan, Russia, Korea, etc. have been invited to teach here. Apart from teachers, there are 1,129 full-time undergraduates and 140 postgraduates.
Japanese Department was first founded in 1985, and was promoted to be four-year baccalaureate degree in 1991, and was authorized Master degree of Japanese Language and Literature in 2000. Japanese Department engages in active international cooperation and exchanges, has reached agreement on exchanging students with Chubu University, University of Creation, and has established long-term cooperation with Japan Foundation, Japan International Cooperation Agency, Japan Culture Exchange Center, and Japan Hotel Group, which achieves tangible results in teaching, researching, talents’ cultivating, and so on. In recent years, to meet the requirements of market demands, Scientific Japanese Translation and Business Japanese teaching has been enhanced, and four major fields have been set up as Japanese Literature, International Trade, Scientific Japanese, and Japanese Practice, and by far, this department has fostered large numbers of qualified graduates, who are favorably received by the employers.
English Department was established in 1996, and has been authorized master degree in recent years. It mainly trains compound and applied talents of English majors who have good command of language, competence of cross-cultural communication, general knowledge of science and technology, and strong computer operating skills, and who are suitable for scientific research, manufacture industry, foreign affairs, and education. English Department endeavors to have unique characteristics and preponderances in accordance of HUST’s and School’s orientation, programming, and goals.
Russian Department began in 2004, and its aim is to foster compound talents of Russian majors who have good command of Russian and communicative ability, and who are able to carry out the work such as foreign affairs, international trade, tourism, and education. The department adopts combined cultivating mode “2+1+1”, which means that the students can choose freely to study two years in China first, and then study 1 year abroad, and finish the four-year study home. It has established close-knit teaching and researching cooperation with many universities of Commonwealth of the Independent States, such as Belarusian State University, Far Eastern State Technical University, Novosibirsk State Technical University, Ussuriysk State Normal University, and achieved the scheme of transnational internship, studies and research.
Korean Department was founded in 2008, with all the teachers graduated from University of International Business and Economics, Korean Chungnam National University, Dalian University of Foreign Languages with master degree and above. Korean Department attaches great importance to the cultivation of students’ language foundation and communicative ability, and actively promote international cooperation with Korean Kwangwoon University and Daejeon University, which enables the students to study in Korea for 1 year after they acquire basic knowledge of Korean language, thus they might get more understanding of Korean culture, lay solid foundation for their future career.
School of Foreign Languages lays emphasis on discipline construction and scientific research, which leads to the achievements of nearly 100 national, provincial, university-level projects, tens of published academic papers on Core Journals, 15 books of national grade publishing company, 4 provincial Excellent Teaching Award, 2 provincial excelsior courses, and many teachers with titles of provincial prominent teachers, star teachers, and pacesetters of professional ethics.
The guiding ideas of School of Foreign Languages rely on resources and conditions in science and technology university, combining scientific awareness and humanity awareness, and fostering compound and applied foreign languages talents. We are to exploit our advantages of the original Scientific Japanese, Scientific English, and enable the Scientific Language majors to recruit students independently. A Brief Introduction to the Majors of the School of Foreign Languages
The School of Foreign Languages offers four specialties: Japanese, English, Russian, and Korean.
1. Japanese: (4-year undergraduate education, students of liberal arts and science are both permitted to be recruited in all the specialties except for the Scientific Japanese which recruits students of science only, and all the students must have English as their second language)
Introduction: The Japanese Major of school of Foreign Languages in Harbin University of Science and Technology was founded in 1985 which was originally labeled as college study for 3 years. In 1991, it upgraded to the undergraduate for 4 years; in 2000, it acquired the qualification of offering the postgraduate degree; in 2010, it acquired the qualification of offering the MTI degree. At present, the Japanese department possesses 31 teachers in total, including 6 master instructors, 3 professors, 8 associate professors, 18 lecturers, and 2 assistant teaching staffs. There are 500 undergraduates and 47 postgraduates in this department currently.
The Japanese Department is widely commended by both the university and the society for its rigorous teaching style. It has done a lot of effort to strengthen the basis of education and, moreover, it vigorously promotes the communication and corporation among the universities abroad. For example,it has already reached agreement with Japan Middle College and Creation College of exchanging returned students. So every year, 4 excellent undergraduates would be sent to the Japan Middle college; 40 would be sent to the Creation College at their own expense for one year and two of them have the chance for scholarship.
Besides, the Japanese Department has established a long term corporation relationship with the organizations like Japan International Communication Fund, Japan Overseas Affairs Association, Japan Cultural Exchange Center and Japan Hotel Association. In recent years, to adapt itself to the demand of market, the Japanese Department emphasizes more on the practical subjects, such as Japanese Translation, Business Japanese and also starts three new specialties which are Japanese Literature, International Trade and scientific Japanese. The scientific Japanese has got an independent recruiting system. In 2011, to deepen the reform of the educational system, strengthen the competitiveness of the Japanese major students toward the market and develop itself with distinguishing features, the Japanese Department will adopt the independent recruiting system, at the same time carry out different teaching plans to train the students which are recruiting both students of liberal arts and science for Japanese Literature, and only students of science for Scientific Japanese to train the students. The Japanese department devotes itself to train the talent with the ability of integrating theory with practice.

2. English: (4-year undergraduate education, students of liberal art and science are both permitted to be recruited in all the specialties except for the Scientific English which recruits students of science only)
Introduction: The English major of school of Foreign Languages in Harbin University of Science and Technology was founded in 1996, and in 2003 it acquired the qualification of offering the English Literature postgraduate degree, in 2010, it acquired the qualification of offering the MTI degree. At present, the English Department possesses 32 teachers in total,including 12 Master Instructors,6 professors, and 11 Associate Professors. There are 470 undergraduates and 93 postgraduates in this department currently.
English major is the junior subject named English Literature belongs to the senior subject foreign language literature. Based on the orientation, planning and the goal of the university and foreign language college,the English Department is trying to show its own advantages and features. During the running process, the department integrates the idea of humanity and Science & Technology, gradually enhances the construction of linguistic courses and trains the composite and practical talent with high moral quality. The English major is divided into three study aspects as English Literature, English of Science and Technology, Business English. In 2011, to deepen the reform of the educational system, strengthen the competitiveness of the English major students toward the market and develop itself with distinguishing features, the English Department will adopt the independent recruiting system, at the same time, it will take the different teaching plans to train the students which are recruiting both students of liberal art and science for English Literature, and only students of science for English study of Science & Technology. As one part of the English major, the English study for Science & Technology also contains two sub-subjects which are Design & Manufacture and Electrical & Electron Engineering to emphatically train the foreign Language talent with a good knowledge of machine and electric.

3. Russian: (4-year undergraduate education; enrollment of students of Arts and Science; second language required English and Russian only)
Introduction:The Russian Major of the School of Foreign Languages in HUST was founded in 2004, and the first enrollment was in the September of 2005. There are 8 teachers on the faculty who have posess at least Master degree. And three of them have got the doctor degree, two of them are pursuing doctor degree, and 3 foreign teachers. Cultivating the foundation of Russian and communication skills and steering the students to engage in foreign affairs, trade, tourism and education, the the Russian Major consists of three research directions, including Russian-Chinese billinguals, technical Russian and economic cooperation trade and tourism Russian. Compound cultivation is based on the voluntary principle, according to which students can choose“2+1+1”learning mode, that is, 2 years in domestic, one year in the Commonweath of Independent States and the last year in China. Cooperating with the universities ofthe Commonwealth of Independent States including the Belorussian national University, theFar east nationalTechnical University, the Novosibirsk national Technical University, the Ussuriysk national Normal University, etc. on education and research, Russian Major has realized international further study and practice.

4.Korean (4-year undergraduate education; enrollment of students of Arts and Science; second language required English and Japanese only)
Introduction:Korean Major of school of Foreign Languages in HUST was founded in 2008. There is an associate professor, 4 lecturers, one foreign teacher and 67 whole-day undergraduate students. One of the four lecturers got the doctor degree fromKorean University of International Culture and the other three lecturers are with master degree from Korean Zhong Nan National University, BeijingForeign Economy and Trade University and Dalian Foreign Language University. Korean Major attaches importance ofthe students’ foundation of Korean and communication skills and cooperates with the universities internationally, including, Korean Yun Guang University, Da Tian National University, Han Ba University, Han Nan University, Pei Cai University, Jian Yang University, An Dong University, Cheng Xin Women University and so on. Students acquired the basic knowledge of Korean can study in Korea for one year, acquaint with Korean culture, enhance the communication skills and lay a good foundation for employment.

The school offers 4 specialties for undergraduates, namely, English, Japanese, Russian and Korean, and has the master authorization first-level discipline with specialties of linguistics, foreign literature, foreign language teaching, and translation, and 2 MTI authorization programs of English and Japanese, with specialties of translation and interpretation. A Brief Introduction to the Scientific Research of the School of Foreign Languages
The School of Foreign Languages, with the largest number of teachers, bears the heaviest workload in our university. However, teaching is the foundation and scientific research is the key. While successfully completing the teaching tasks of college English and English majors, teachers have developed hard-working, pragmatic, pioneering and innovative spirits to make scientific researches present a sustainable, steady and vigorous prospect. In the past five years, teachers in our school have made fruitful achievements in discipline construction and scientific researches.
Our school has made a significant breakthrough in discipline construction. Approved by the 28thSession of Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, it has acquired the first level Master’s degree in “Foreign Language and Literature” discipline, which marks a new stage in our overall strength and contributes a lot in constructing a high-quality university during the implementation of “12thFive-Year Plan”.
Our teachers have hosted three national projects, including one from the Second Series of College English Teaching Reform Extension Projects supported by the Ministry of Education and two from the Sub-project of Chinese Language Education Foundation. The teachers have hosted and participated in over 30 provincial-level and ministerial-level teaching research projects, such as, New Century Teaching Reform Projects, Higher Education and Research Planning Projects, College English Teaching Reform Projects and Foreign Language Teaching and Research Projects, and over 20 academic research projects, such as, Philosophy and Social Science Foundation Projects and Humanities and Social Science Research Projects. Two projects have been granted the first prize of Heilongjiang Higher Education Teaching Research Achievement, and two, the second prize. One has been awarded the second of Heilongjiang Higher Education Scientific Research Achievement. More than 20 university-level projects, including Youth Foundation Projects and Teaching Research Projects, have been carried out. More than 400 papers have been published, among which one has been published in the national newspaper, 23 has been included in CSSCI and five has been published in Chinese core periodicals. More than 20 textbooks have been published, including 11 national ones. One has been awarded the third prize of Heilongjiang Excellent Higher Education Scientific Research Achievement. Five Monographs have been published, including two translated works, and one has been granted the third prize of Outstanding Achievement Award of Heilongjiang University Humanities and Social Sciences.
