Introduction toSchoolofComputerScience and Technology
SchoolofComputer Scienceand Technology of HUST has been undergoing a long history, which has enrolled undergraduates in Computer and Applied Science as early as the 70s of last century. After years of development,SchoolofComputer Scienceand Technology was established in 2005 comprising the departments of Computer Technology, Network Engineering,LaboratoryTeachingCenter,InstituteofComputer Application Technology, R & D Center of Power Equipment, R & D Center of Information.
The School with proficient teaching staff possesses 102 teachers, among whom eighteen professors, thirty-five associate professors and senior engineers, three entitled to government subsidies of the State Council, six doctoral supervisors, and twenty-six master supervisors are included. More than 90% of the young teachers have doctorate or master degree, and a large number of teachers used to study, lecture, or conduct cooperative researches in theUnited States,Japan,Canada,Russia,Swedenand other countries.
The School has two undergraduate specialties which are Computer Science and Technology and Network Engineering, and three Master’s Degree Granting Disciplines which are Computer Architecture, Computer Software Theory, and Computer Application Technology. Furthermore, HUST is the only provincial university in theNortheast Chinawith Doctoral Degree Granting discipline in Computer Science. The School is also authorized to cultivate and grant Master Degree for university teachers in Computer Technology, Software Engineering and Computer Application Technology. The undergraduate discipline of Computer Science and Technology constitutes the national featured and key discipline, and Computer Application Technology the provincial key discipline. The school has advanced laboratory equipment and software, such as SUN workstations, servers, network switches, routers, firewalls, network tester, fiber welding machine, bench computer organization, interface test-bed, EDA test bed, embedded system development test bed, Unix, Linux operating system, Oracle, Sybase databases, Ideas, and UG software. Undergraduate and graduate students amount to 2600.
The School with a strong research potential comprises academic branches in graphic image processing technology, CIMS, and information, network and information security technology, power plant equipment control technology, database theory and application of technology, embedded system applications. In recent years, it has undertaken 160 projects of national, provincial and bureau level in which more than 30 ones are awarded withProvincial Award of Scientific Research Advancement, six projects patented, and four software copyrights obtained. More than 500 papers and 30 academic works and textbooks have been published. A large number of outstanding talents in computer application have been cultivated.
Discipline Name: Computer System Architecture

Research direction and characteristics of the discipline:
The subject has been formed with a number of substantial researches, such as Network information security (NIS), Web information processing (WIP), Computational intelligence, Database & Management information systems, Embedded systems and Wireless sensor network, etc.
Based on information security and intelligent technology, the kernel problems are tackled in the fields ofNISand WIP. Three major research directions are focused: real-time online information filter, traffic classification and application protocols identification, solution of informationization. Many international advanced systems are developed in the network and security fields, such as1Gnetwork system with traffic classification and application protocols identification, high-throughput content filtering system, online Spam filter system, intelligent specific-domain search engine, Chinese text categorization and clustering system, natural language processing system. Parts of them are promoted to products, which harvests great social fame and economic benefits.
In the recent five years, the researches are supported by China National Nature Science Grants, China 242 Projects, Research Fund for the Doctoral Program of Higher Education of China, Heilongjiang Provincial Science and Technology Development Projects, Heilongjiang Provincial Nature Science Grants, Research Fund for the Program of New Century Excellent Talents in Heilongjiang Provincial University, Harbin Science and Technology Development Projects, Harbin Special Funds for Creative Talents in Science and Technology, Fund of Harbin University of Science and Technology for Young Outstanding Innovative Talents. The staff have got several provincial and ministerial level scientific and technological progress awards, and published more than 100 papers. Furthermore, more than 80 papers are indexed by SCI, EI and ISTP. Meanwhile, 5 patents are applied.
Based on the skills of embedded systems and wireless sensor network, the researches are supported by China National Nature Science Grant, Heilongjiang Provincial Nature Science Grants, Heilongjiang Provincial Science and Technology Development Projects, Heilongjiang Provincial Young Program of Science Grant and the Cooperative Development Projects with . The faculties have got several provincial and ministerial level scientific and technological progress awards, and several educational awards. More than 40 academic articles are published in core journals and international conferences. Meanwhile, more than 20 papers are indexed by SCI, EI and ISTP. Furthermore, four books are edited.
We have built close connection with many academic organizations, such as Tsinghua University, Harbin Institute of Technology,ChineseAcademyof Sciences, etc. Strong partnerships with Microsoft, Baidu, Tencent, Alibaba, and Huawei have been established. Furthermore, experts fromUSA,Britainand other countries are invited to deliver lectures.
Discipline Name: Computer Software and Theory

Research direction and characteristics of the discipline:
The discipline has formed a number of stable researches, such as image processing and computer vision, intelligent computing and optimum design theory, network and information security technology, database and management information systems, computer graphics, and CAD. As for the exploiting environment of Daqing Oilfield, researchers provide solution to the problem of dynamic monitoring of oil field measurement parameters with the new detection method. For the requirements of industrial design of CNC machine tools, electrical meters and other electrical products, the staff have developed three-dimensional physical system CAID, and applied it to the industry. Vulnerability classification model is established and CVE classification database system is developed, which has been used in National Network andInformationSecurityManagementCenter. The staff of the discipline established data dependent of relational database and standardized model with null values, and proposed a new “relationship model with null values”,axiom system accordingly and a series theory of relational databases with null values. We presented the scheduling algorithm, Critical Path Method, Compact Method of Key Equipment, Dynamic Virtual Technology Method, and Minimum Processing Time Method, which can solve the special scheduling and optimization problems in production processes.
In the past five years, a total number of 156 commitments to National Ministries Project, National Natural Science Foundation of China, Provincial Projects and Commissioned Projects were completed, and appropriated research funding of 25.6 million Yuan. Eight provincial and ministerial level scientific and technological progress awards were granted, and more than 560 papers were published, among which more than 230 papers were retrieved by three principal index systems.
The discipline invited experts and scholars from the United States, Japan, Russia, Canada and other countries frequently to deliver lectures and make academic exchanges; teachers are sent to the United States, Japan, Britain, Canada, Russia and other countries for further study, visit and academic exchange, which broaden the horizon of teachers, improve the academic level, and establish strong parternership with international counterparts.

Research direction and characteristics of the discipline:
Computer Applications Technology is the second level discipline in computer science and technology focusing on the theory, method and technology of computers applied in various fields. Computer Applications Technology of HUST is the key discipline ofHeilongjiangprovince, andHUST is the only provincial university in theNortheast Chinawith Doctoral Degree Granting discipline in this subject, which enjoys great advantage among similar disciplines.
The discipline seized the opportunity of higher education reform and took the road of development by leaps and bounds, which centered on undergraduate education while developing graduate education rapidly. The features of the discipline are distinctive educational target, high education and research quality and proficient faculty. To adapt to economic and social development, the discipline undertook the opportunity of adjusting old industrial bases inNortheast Chinato take the road of integrating teaching, research and production under the guidance of “centering on teaching and supporting by research”. It has formed the research direction of image processing and computer vision, intelligent design theory calculation and optimization, network and information security technology, database and management information systems, computer graphics and CAD and other research.
Experts and scholars from theUnited States,Japan,Russia,Canadaand other countries have been invited to present lectures and perform academic exchanges. Faculties of HUST have been sent to theUnited States,Japan,Britain,Canada, andRussiato further study and exchange experience, which has broadened their vision, consolidated the foundation of the discipline and established smooth cooperation with international counterparts.
Introduction to Computer Science and Technology
Computer Science and Technology of HUST, a national first class discipline, constitutes a provincial key discipline, which is composed of a doctoral program---Computer Application Technology, three master’s degree programs--- Computer Application Technology, Computer Software and Theory and Computer Architecture, and two stations of engineering master---Computer Technology and Software Engineering. Students of the discipline mainly focus on and knowledge of Computer Science and Technology, and undergo fundamental practical training on computer research and application.The skills they are supposed to command include: document searching and data querying, English proficiency (national CET4 level), the of Computer Engineering and Information Technology, and researching and developing computer software and hardware systems. Graduates are expected to obtain the skills about the following aspects of application technology after completing courses of different specialty-directions: Database Application, Computer Control, Computer Aided Design, Embedded System Application and Network Application Technology.

Introduction to Network Engineering
The students of this branch mainly focus on essential technical knowledge and theory about network engineering, and are trained in basic skills for research and application of computer network engineering technology. The skills they are supposed to command include: document searching and data querying, English proficiency (national CET4 level), thefundamental theoryof computer network engineering, and basic skills for network system design and engineering practice.Graduates are expected to obtain the skills about the following aspects of application technology after completingelectivecourses of different specialty-directions: network planning and design, network management, site planning and design and ecommerce technology.
Principal courses:data structures, digital circuits and logic, operating systems, database systems, network programming, signal processing theory, microcomputer technology, data communications theory, network and communications, theory of program-controlled exchanging, network security, computer network architecture, network equipment, broadband wireless digital communications, JAVA programming language.
Employment orientation:Graduates of this major are expected to engage in R&D, application design, implementation, maintenance, management and teaching and other technical work of computer network systems in information technology industry, government agencies, military and other departments related to this branch. And the other alternative is to further study for master degree of Computer Science and Technology or the related disciplines.
