2014 China Open British Parliamentary Debate held in Sichuan University on May 9 - 11. This competition is sponsored by Willamette University and China Debate Education Network. The team from our university won the second prize in this event after 6 round-robins and 1 quarter-final. The team members are Long Jiang from our Power Electronics and Power Transmission 12-3, Graduate School and Huang Yu from Communication Engineering 12-1. This result is a new breakthrough after the first prize in Northeast HUST-CDEN Tournament.
This competition is composed of two languages, which are English and Chinese. 400 debaters of 200 teams from domestic and abroad participate the tournament. The motions cover a wide range of subjects including politics, economics, science and technology, education and social culture. The motions are published 15 minutes before each competition. During this 15 minutes’ period, only discussion between the two debaters is permitted, and any of network resources is prohibited. Every debater must finish the speech for 7 minutes about the rebuttal for the opposite side and arguments for their own. At the same time, there are points of information from the opposite side. It is a great challenge for the debaters in aspects of background knowledge, critical thinking and language skills.
The success in this tournament attributes to the support from heads of our university, Office of Teaching Affairs, and Foreign Languages School. We hope more students from our university participate this competition, constantly break the best records of language contests, and show the charms of our university.
The tutors for this tournament are Yang Xin and Guan Ning from our Foreign Languages School.
