HUST Hosts Seminar: Zhao Lin Encourages Young Teachers for High-Quality Development

In the afternoon of October 10th, HUST convened a seminar in the second conference room of the main teaching building. The event aimed to gather insights from young teachers on personnel and talent management. Zhao Lin emphasized the importance of deeply understanding General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important discourse on building an educationally strong country. It is crucial for achieving high-level technological self-reliance, promoting the common prosperity of the entire population, and advancing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation through Chinese-style modernization. Zhao Lin stressed that to achieve high-quality and connotation-based development,HUSTmust focus on discipline construction, promote scientific and technological innovation, form teams, expand areas of growth, and enhance the influence ofHUSTin the industry.Secretary Zhao Lin compared HUST’s development direction with that of other universities and emphasized the need to enhanceHUST’sinfluence in the industry continuously. This involves aligning with discipline construction, promoting scientific and technological innovation, forming teams, expanding areas of growth, and increasing efforts to attract high-level talents. She also highlighted the importance of paying attention to the growth of young teachers and creating an environment conducive to their development.Furthermore, she emphasized the need to improve the teacher evaluation system, refine disciplinary directions, strengthen academic team construction, and actively engage in organized research work. The goal is to achieve new results in core technology, innovative development serving the regional area, and enhancing industry competitiveness.
Secretary Zhao Linalsoconveyed appreciation for the pivotal role played by young faculty members in the ongoing reform and development of the institution. Emphasizing the strategic importance of cultivating talent for the university’s progress, she articulated three key expectations for the young educators.Firstly, she urged them to consolidate their political and theoretical foundations, steadfastly embracing Xi Jinping’s new era ideology. Young teachers were encouraged to persistently learn, uphold the essence of education, and embody the qualities of a“Great Teacher”characterized by unwavering ideals, moral integrity, and substantial knowledge.Secondly, Secretary Zhao stressed the fundamental task of moral and talent cultivation. Young teachers were advised to prioritize personal moral development, becoming exemplars in guiding students’thoughts and shaping their values, ultimately aiming to be inspiring figures in the new era’s journey.Lastly, she called for a continuous enhancement of teaching and research capabilities. Focusing on organized activities that align with national strategic needs and regional development, young teachers were urged to elevate their proficiency in education, talent development, scientific research, and community service. The emphasis on academic exchanges and industry influence aimed to contribute significantly to the university’s standing in the academic landscape. These expectations, Secretary Zhao highlighted, are pivotal for the university’s educational mission and the holistic advancement of its young teaching staff.
During theseminar, four nationally recognized high-level talents—Chen Minghua, Chi Qingguo, Chen Zhen, and Hu Jun—expressed their gratitude for theHUST’s support and acknowledgment of the achievements in the reform of the personnel and talent system. Drawing from their personal growth and experiences, these teachers provided constructive opinions and suggestions on various aspects of the university’s personnel and talent management, such as establishing a comprehensive talent management system, refining disciplinary directions, guiding the construction of large teams, intensifying publicity for talent recruitment, formulating talent cultivation policies, balancing the treatment of introduced and cultivated talents, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, supporting academic exchanges, and optimizing assessment standards.Other young faculty members also contributed suggestions and recommendations, addressing topics like expanding industry influence, facilitating the rapid growth of young talents, optimizing talent recruitment policies, increasing the proportion of full-time postdoctoral positions, encouraging teachers to study abroad, and refining the second mentorship system. Theseminar lasted for over five hours, characterized by enthusiastic participation and frequent interactions among the young teachers. Their active engagement showcased the spirit of theHUST’s young faculty and their determination to contribute to the development of the university’s teaching staff and the high-quality advancement of disciplines.
vicepresidentYang Zhongxue pointed out that from May 22 to September 12, 2023, the personnel department conducted research and discussions on the current status, issues, and suggestions related to personnel and talent management in 11departments. He emphasized the need for further improvements and optimizations in various aspects, including top-level design, the role of colleges in talent recruitment, team-building support policies, talent evaluation, and performance distribution mechanisms, the independent cultivation of high-level talents, and the soft and hard environment for talent growth.HUSTis currently drafting a series of comprehensive reform documents for personnel and talent management, comprising an action plan (1) and several supporting documents (N). Opinions have already been sought for three of these documents, with more to follow.VicepresidentYang encouraged young faculty members to provide valuable feedback in this ongoing process.
