Director of Teaching Affairs Office Ge Baojun’s Lecture — Talent Cultivation and Cultural Concept of HK Higher Education Institutions

At 2 pm April 13, 2011, in the Lecture Hall of the 5thfloor of new Main Building of Western Campus, the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, School of Computer Science and other 9 schools, the Party General Branch of 3 centers, and Subordinate Party Branch jointly held the special activity of building the learning Party organization, inviting Director of Teaching Affairs Office Ge Baojun to deliver a lecture titledTalent Cultivation and Cultural Concept of Hongkong Higher Education Institutions, which was attended by the cadres and teachers of the 9 schools and 3 centers and all the personnel of the Teaching Affairs Office. This activity fully embodied the concept of ‘emphasizing Party building while focusing on work’ of the 12th Five-Year Plan of HUST to integrate the activity of building the learning Party organization with the priority of imparting knowledge and educating students, providing strong support for accelerating the building of a competent university.

The lecture was comprised of 6 parts, namely introduction, overview of HK’s education, faculty management of Chinese University of HK (CUHK for short), talent cultivation of CUHK, culture and concept of university and conclusion. With humorous language, Director Ge Baojun introduced what he saw and heard through attending the Training Programme for the Senior Administrative Staff from Heilongjiang Higher Education Institutions (Cycle 3) and the current education situation of HK for the participants, and emphasized the introduction to talent cultivation and cultural concept of HK higher education institutions taking CUHK as an example.

While introducing the ‘culture and concept of university’, Director Ge Baojun mentioned the requirements of HK higher education institutions to the teaching staff that whether or not having the capability to overcome the difficulty and cultivate the graduates who would create profits for the enterprise, whether or not having the capability to fulfill the unlovable duty effectively and whether or no having the capability to share and lessen the worry for the leader. He also stated that HK higher education institutions attached great importance to teamwork cooperation ability and teamwork education, and the OBA teaching concept as well (Outcomes-Based Approach, namely OBA, may be interpreted as ‘efficacy-based teaching concept’ or ‘reversed thinking model’).

As for education reform, combining the talent cultivation concept of HK higher education institutions, Director Ge Baojun summarized that for a university with the focus on technology, the key of cultivating the graduates appreciated by the enterprise was not only the teacher’s transformation from self-mind based to demand of enterprise based, but also associating with the outline of national medium-term and long-term education reform and development planning (2010-2020), and Excellent Engineer Training Plan carried out recently, advancing with the times, strengthening study, improving competence, broadening horizon, revising the concept and applying it to practice; at the same time, the students should be taught to gain the self-learning capability and the habit of life-long learning.

Director Ge Baojun concluded his lecture by quoting the remarks said by Li Tianming, who was the former professor of Philosophy Department of CUHK, philosopher and poet, that ‘Successful education can effectively provide the life equipment, and the person will enjoy the learning process as well; unsuccessful education cannot and waste the life.’

Director Ge Baojun’s lecture gained high praise from the participants, who expressed that they benefited a lot from it and would like to keep the lecture record and corresponding courseware, considering that professor Ge Baojun’s lecture broadened their horizon, expanded knowledge, transformed the education concept and defined the direction of education reform.
