My fellow comrades and friends:

Today, I would like to take the opportunity of Cardres’ Training to share my personal understanding on promoting HUST’s construction in the new era with all of you.

A strong university is commonly acknowledged to take the leading role in quality of applied talents, academic development, and social services. From my perspective, the highest criterior belongs to those top-ranking research universities of the world, most of which are in western countries. Except for the differences of internal and external environment between western universities and us, we can use their running ideas and managing methods for reference.

Why they are strong? As far as I am concerned, apart from the above factors, there could be another two, namely, mature ideas and sound administrative mechanisms, which might be considered as the fundamental elements for the top-ranking research universities. Generally speaking, the basic quality of their ideas consists of three aspects, concerning academic research first policy, academic independence, and establish communication with universities around the world. As for the administrative mechanisms, which could be the guarantee system for strong universities, there are also three matters to be mentioned, that is, to administrate by laws and regulations, to regard professors and reseachers as one part of policy-makers, and to establish fair, open, honest academicevaluationmechanisms.

Admittedly, some gaps still exist between strong universities and us. First, we lack further consideration on how to construct our university, that is, the running idea of our university; then we are in great need of a unique, high-qualitied, and creative academic character; thirdly, we should promote our competitiveness in teaching body and management team as well; fourthly, we call for more rigorous scholarship and steady style of stufy; fifthly, we need to reform on our administrative mechanisms to improve our management power; lastly, we urge to have more specified university culture and spirit, which rest upon the faculty’s culture values and the students’ culture literacy.

Consequently, confronting so many problems in the course of constructing and developing our university, we should sobered our mind and exploit our advantages to the full so as to promote the construction of our school all with one mind consistently.

Yet, we still may say our dream to become a strong university is achievavle. After 60 years’ accumulation, we now boast fine prestige and credibility, our own Chinese Engineering Academician as the leading talent, national key diciplines, national key laboratory-traing center, natioanal Science Park, quiet a number disciplines accreditted with doctorate and masterate degrees, a rational discipline arrangement, and so forth. All of these provide us with a platform on which we could construct our school as a strong university, which require us to improve style of study, reform in education, push the staff into the leading edge of science and techonolgy, establishing far-ranging social bond, and so on, to achieve mutual benefit with society,

Dear faculty and staff, there is no uniform definition for strong universities, whereas all the strong universities share common qulities as high-leveled academic products, outstanding academic atmosphere, progressive running ideas and standard internal management systems. Provided we catch hold of the key link of quality, characteristic, staff, academy, management and education, and provided everyone of us would fulfil his/her duty, be bold to put things into practice, we indeed can accomplish the aim of promoting the construction of strong university, and HUST holds a bright future.
