On Jan. 13, the preparatory meeting of “Educating and Training Program of Excellent Engineers” was grandly held in No. 1 Conference Room of the Main Building. Vice President Meng Dawei attended and addressed the meeting. Those from Academic Affairs Office and schools of engineering-based education, responsible for teaching affairs, also attended the meeting chaired by Ge Baojun, Director of Academic Affairs Office.

“Educating and Training Program of Excellent Engineers” (referred to as “Excellence Program”) is the major reform project to implement National Long-term Education Reform and Development Program (2010-2020) and National Long-term Talent Development Program (2010-2020), and the major initiative to realize the transition of China’s big power of engineering education to a leading power.

Meng pointed out that the teaching units should fully understand the significance of “Excellence Program”. The program, which plays an important modeling and guiding role in improving the quality of professionals majoring in engineering, is to cultivate a large number of high-quality engineering and technical professionals with great innovative capability for the sake of economic development with the aim of adopting new patterns of industrialization, building an innovation-oriented country and implementing the strategy of “Reinvigorating China through Human Resources Development”.

Ge deployed the specific tasks, requiring the teaching units to carry out “Excellence Program” with a reforming approach, the teachers to change ideas and innovate teaching contents and methods, the teachers to be equipped with practical engineering ability, penetrate the practical experience into theoretical teaching to provide genuine materials for intramural experiments and practice, and expand the application of professional knowledge to the engineering field with engineering education as the core. With the goal of promoting students’ engineering literacy, cultivate their practical, designing and innovating ability in engineering, participants in each program should communicate with enterprises during every winter vacation, collect and integrate relevant supporting materials and make a draft plan in accordance with the provided template before the next semester. Our university will organize experts to examine materials and offer reasonable suggestions for further improvement.

Attendees at the meeting held a positive and hot discussion, expressing their common will to effectively carry out the program and make it perfect by putting their heads together.

At the end of the meeting, Meng re-emphasized that the teaching units should take the program seriously and solve new difficulties and problems in the implementation of “Excellence Program”. With the establishment and implementation of “Excellence Program” being a test itself, we must overcome difficulties, make bold explorations and sum up experience in practice to do a good job actively and steadily.
