In lateNovember, a3-year-old girl,Cao Yuhan, aroused great concern on campus of Harbin University of Science and Technology (HUST). Being rescued inintensive care unit (ICU)at Children’sHospitalofHarbin,the little girl’s lifehung by a thread due tobilateral pneumoniawhichcausedrespiratory failureandmultiple organfailure. Yuhan’streatment costs were more than 5,000 every day, and the further treatment called “pulmonary surfactant” drugs, each of which up to 30,000 was needed, which made her family with financial difficulties even worse.Her father,Cao Zuobao, the young teacher from theDepartment ofApplied Mathematics, Schoolof Applied Sciencesof HUST,has been unable to bear the huge medical expenses.

Learning of the news, teachers from the Department of Applied Mathematicsandleadersfrom the

SchoolofApplied Sciencesimmediately went tothe hospital to visitandcontribute.Under HUSTleadership’s concern, Trade Union initiated faculty’s donations to save Yuhan’s life. After theinitiativebeing issued, donation activities have been in full swingoncampus. In ashort period of time, the number ofdonationsfrom the faculty and students amounts tomore than 130,000yuan. While donations arrived successively,Cao Zuobaowas deeply moved and said he wouldwork hard in the futureto thankHUSTfacultyfor their selflesshelp.

In this cold winter, with HUST faculty’s great love, Yuhan finally had a brush with death and went from ICU to a general ward. At present she has turned the corner, lovely smile on her face once more. It is HUST’s great love for Yuhan to re-ignite the flame of her life and re-raise her life of sailing. We wish Yuhan a speedy recovery and going back to kindergarten children around as soon as possible. On the afternoon of Dec. 23, 2010, Liu Zhixin, Vice Chairman of Trade Union (right) and Yin Jinghua, General Party Branch Secretary of Applied Sciences School visited Yuhan at Children’s Hospital of Harbin and sent her family (Cao Zuobao, center; Yuhan’s mother, left) the recent donation 26,634.00 yuan.

After the initiative being issued by the Trade Union, donation activities have been in full swing on campus. In a short period, the number of donations from the faculty amounts to 133,264.00 yuan ending on Dec. 23, 2010.
