After two rounds of reviews and the final election during 6 months, 54 new members, aging from 46 to 74, were finally elected out of 485 candidates to the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and Gao Wen, an HUST alumnus from Computer Science Department Grade 1979, made his way into the final list of the newly elected academicians of the CAE, a CAE brief conference released on Dec. 8, 2011.
Gao Wen, Member of the tenth National Committee of CPPCC, was born in 1956 in Dalian. He received a BS in CS from Harbin University of Science and Technology in 1982, an MS in CS from Harbin Institute of Technology in 1985, a PhD in CS from Harbin Institute of Technology in 1988 and a PhD in EE from the University of Tokyo in Japan in 1991. Gao Wen currently works as Professor and Ph.D Supervisor in Peking University, Director of the Institute of Digital Media, Professor in Harbin Institute of Technology, Professor in the Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chief Scientist in China Unioncom National Lab.
As a visiting scientist, Prof. Gao Wen has been to the Robotics Institute in Carnegie Mellon University and the AI Lab in Massachusetts Institute of Technology in USA. In 1992, he won the membership of a project on Intelligent Computer under the National High Technology Research and Development Program (863 program) as an expert and worked as the leader of the expert panel in 1996-2000. In 1996, Prof. Gao Wen was enrolled as a young talent under the Hundred Talents Program launched by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. His major academic and social positions include: Managing Director in Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (1998 - 1999), Professor & Executive Vice President in Graduate School, Chinese Academy of Sciences (2000 - 2004), Professor & Vice President in University of Science and Technology of China (2000 - 2003), Editor-in-chief in Journal of Computer (Chinese), Associate editor in IEEE T-CSVT, Associate editor in IEEE T-MM, just to name a few.
Prof. Gao Wen is currently the Chairman of the working group responsible for setting a national Audio Video coding Standard (AVS) for China. He is also the Head of Delegation to the ISO/IEC/JTC1/SC29/MPEG of International Standard Organization representing China. Meanwhile, he works as an honorary professor in the University of Missouri-Kansas City, an ICSI External Fellow, and a part-time professor in many universities, such as Tsinghua University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Xi’an Jiaotong University, Tongji University, etc.
