On May 8, Professor Xie Lili, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, head of Chinese Association for Earthquake Engineering, and the vice president of International Association for Earthquake Engineering, delivered a speechCultivating Innovative Talentsin No. One Building, hosted by Vice General Secretary Meng Shangjiu. All the students’ counselors, relevant teachers in theSchoolofArchitectural Engineering, and some young teachers in other schools, graduate students and undergraduates attended the lecture.
Before the lecture, the General Secretary of HUST Zhao Guogang met with Xie Lili and had a talk with Xie. Zhao expressed his gratitude for Xie Lili’s coming. The two parties exchanged ideas on cultivating students. Later, Zhao granted an employment certificate to Xie, who became a lecturer of the Students Forum. Xie is an honorary director of theInstituteofEngineering Mechanicsof the Seismological Bureau, professor and doctoral supervisor of theSchoolofArchitectureand Construction in HIT, the academician of theChineseAcademyofEngineeringand enjoys great fame both at home and abroad.
During the lecture, Xie Lili centers on “Confronting Qian Xuesen’s Questions—on cultivating college students” and interprets the ways for universities to cultivate students, which is a hot issue of the whole country and society. Xie responded to Qian’s Questions in unique perspective. He analyzed the basic conditions for cultivating talents and the deficiency of higher institutions. Combining his own experience and thinking, he proposed his understanding for cultivating innovative talents.
After the lecture, students swarmed to the platform to consult Xie. Meng concluded the lecture from the perspective of independent thinking, rational thinking and responsibility. All the students and faculties listened to the lecture carefully which enabled them to broaden their horizon, enhance their understanding towards cultivating innovative talents, and stimulate their enthusiasm for study and research.
