The New Year’s bell is about to ring, and 2016 will soon begin. On this special occasion, I would like, on behalf of HUST, to extend my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to everybody in every field and every corner of the world, to everybody who are now working or studying, or have ever worked or studied in our university, and to everybody who may pay his or her concern and support to our university, for thecomingNew Year!
The auspicious seasonable snow waved goodbye to 2015, the final year for us to accomplish HUST’s 12thFive-Year Plan, as well as a year we had to make additional efforts to override more difficulties and adversities because of a series of unexpected scandals keeping on hitting HUST in succession. What a pity for us to experience so many accidental misfortunes in China’s Lunar Year of Ram, a year should be lucky, grand and peaceful in accordance with traditional Chinese culture! But we have not lose heart. On the contrary, we envisaged reality in front of hardships, managed to promote all our work smoothly and orderly, and successfully optimized the environmental resources for school running in both “hardware” and “software” indexes, which should have laid a solid foundation for our planned spanning development in the next five years.
In 2015, great progress was made in HUST’stalent cultivation.Morality education was highlighted and a new educating standard was set up, aiming at cultivating students into talents with integrate knowledge structure, satisfactory practical ability and outstanding innovative awareness, based on which the 2015 edition of HUST Undergraduate Education schema and the corresponding dynamic adjustment mechanism were worked out, “O2O curriculum” construction and preparatory work for professional engineering education accreditation were launched in nine majors. We have two teachers granted provincial distinguished teachers awards, as well as one instructor awarded as provincial “Instructor of the Year” and run for national “Instructor of the Year”. By promoting the project of “bridging the gap between enterprises and campus”, the employment rate and quality of HUST graduates rose steadily, sharply contrary to the huge pressure of social employment. These good news offset those negative effects on HUSTfrom unexpected scandals,and even enhanced our social reputation further.Compare with 2014, seven more provinces adoptedHUSTas one of their first batch universities to enroll high school graduates while the required NCEE grades to be admitted by HUST were raised a lot in every province, municipality and autonomous region.
In 2015, great progress was made in HUST’s scientific research, including 33 projects supported by national natural science fund, 2 by humanistic social science fund, and 5 by MOE humanistic social science fund. Moreover, we won one 2ndprize of MOE’s outstanding S&T achievements for higher educational institutions, six provincial S&T prizes,755 authorized patents, and published 215SCI-retrieved papers as well as423 EI-retrieved papers.Our National University Science Park was ranked among the first group of national demonstration agencies for small business innovation And entrepreneurship, and marked the second consecutive year of being appraised asthe only class-A National High-tech Business incubator in Heilongjiang province .
In 2015, great progress was made in HUST’s teaching staff construction, institutional construction and operational conditions. We brought in 78 full-time teachers, 62 of who are PhD degree holders. As to in-service teachers, 28 got their PhD degrees,12 completed their postdoctoral study and 26 were admitted as visiting scholars at home and abroad.We launched the first among other Heilongjiang universities and colleges of similar status to us in the work of post setting and finished the first turn of position appointment, which marked an important step in shifting HUST from identity management to position management and laid a solid foundation for us to boost two-leveled (U & S) administration in future. By carrying forward the spirit of democracy and mobilizing the mass, we accomplished HUST Constitution, which can been seen as our first “fundamental charter”for internal running and initialed an overall construction of modern university system in HUST. By taking measures such as risk forewarning and scientific allocation, we raised enough fund to ensure school running as well as give out the fast rising salaries and allowances to the whole working staff. The construction of teachers’ apartments runs smoothly, so doesthe preparatory work ofoverall campus network coverage construction.
There arealso two historical events happened in 2015 worth HUSTers’ remembering for ever.
In 2015, we held the celebration marking the 100thbirth anniversary of Academician Wang Daheng, our honorable president, and set up Wang Daheng Fund for Education and Technology Development. Besides, thanks to the generous donation (1 million RMB yuan) from Mr. Rao Luhua, one of HUST’s millionaire alumni, a bronze statue of Academician Wang was established in the middle of West Campus.
In 2015, we held HUST’s 3rdCPC Congress successfully. We made an overall review of the work done in HUST for implementing her “12thFive-Year Plan” as well as the corresponding achievements and experience we gained, analyzed the situation and challenges HUST confronted right now and defined the guiding principle, tasks and measures for her further development. As a congress of breaking new ground and gathering strength, it shouldhit a significant milestonein HUST splendid history.
The above facts eloquently proved that we are honest and steadfast HUSTers, we are self-improved and self-confident HUSTers, we can withstand any setback or bitter experience, and we never give up in front of any difficulties!
Too many beautiful dreams are waiting for us to realize in the upcoming 2016, so that we can have a good beginning for HUST to promoting our “13thFive-Year” Plan. There is no denying that a good beginning is half done, whereas there is no denying that we are facing a lot of difficulties, esp, the unprecedented expenditure shortage and the negative effects from our 2015’s shaded memory, which need all of us unite tighter to press on, with our pragmatic spirit and pioneering spirit, to create a more brilliant 2016!
My dear comrades, my dear friends, time and tide wait for no man. Let’s review the spirit of HUST’s 3rdCPC Congress, take all accomplishments we get in 2015 as fulcrums for us to achieve the next spanning development, and regard all mishaps we encountered in 2015 as special ordeal to temper our willpower. Just like Shelley’s saying, “If winter comes, can spring be far behind?” I do not believe we have suffered the coldest winters in HUST development up to now, but I do believe we can sailed through the coldest winter even though it should come some day, and then, surely we will meet with the most colorful and beautiful springtime, so long as we are honest and steadfast HUSTers, so long as we are self-improved and self-confident HUSTers as always! Yes, I do believe!
