On August 22, 2016, the National Final for the 10th Chemical Engineering Design Contest of National University Students was held successfully at Sichuan University, students from the School of Chemical Engineering, HUST, won the national tournament prize, which is the third time for our students to win an award in the competition.
The competition was sponsored by Chinese Chemical Society, Chinese Education Association of chemical industry, the Ministry of Education in Chemical Engineering Teaching Guidance Committee intending for the college students majoring in chemical engineering and chemical engineering, and it is of the highest level, and of the most influence. The competition attracted more than and 200 universities in the country with more than two thousand teams participating, which is divided into two stages: preliminaries and finals. Preliminaries are held in the seven division, namely, eastern China, southern China, north China, central China, northwest, southwest and northeast of China .
Our school sent a total of three teams to participate, Team Legendary, Team Shut Downand Team Sky-wing. Three teachers, Guo Ying, Wang Hong and Pei Lei, are responsible for supervising and giving guidance to their training, and meanwhile, they aim to train students' innovative thinking, engineering experience, team cooperation and the ability to learn basic knowledge to solve complex engineering problems. Upon receiving the contest notice, the three teams need to learn to use more than a dozen softwares within four months, such as Auto cad, Aspen Plus, Aspen Energy Analyzer, Aspen Ecnomic Analyzer, Aspen HYSYS, Aspen Exchanger Design and Rating, Risksystem, water design, SW6-2011, Cup-tower, and so forth.
They also need to simulate and design technological process, provide the process scheme of the proposed plant, feasibility report, preliminary design specification, material balance, energy balance, equipment selection, economic accounting, environmental assessment and safety assessment and other related documents, and use the software rendering PID diagram, PFD diagram, equipment layout, equipment assembly workshop, three-dimensional layout, axonometrics, plant general layout etc. Moreover, by means of 3DMax and other software, they need to present a 3D animation show of the whole picture of the proposed plant and the various workshops.
After several months’ continuously diligent training, on July 28, our school teams ultimately won two first prizes, and one third prize after the team speech and defense in the provincial competition, demonstrating the strength of our school students. Days later, the Team Legendary took part in the Northeast China Finals held on August 4 on behalf of our school, and finally the team got the qualification to participate in the national finals of the Tenth National Chemical Design Competition. In the National Finals held at the Sichuan University, our school Team Legendary got the national first prize, Team Shut Down national second prize.
