On June 2nd 2022, according to official announcement of the Russian Academy of Sciences(RAS), 48 foreigners were elected as foreign academicians. This is aimed at commending the unremitting contribution they had made in the scientific field. Professor Shen Zexiang, part-time doctoral supervisor of our university, director of Graphite-Graphene Applied Technology Collaborative Innovation Center of Heilongjiang Province and chief scientist, was elected by a vast majority. This is a good news since professor Cai Wei of our university, who is the leader of leading team about “Research on new energy motor system and key materials”, was elected as a foreign academician of Russian Academy of Engineering in April this year.
It is known that the Russian Academy of Sciences is the top academic institution and the largest entity of scientific research in the Russian Federation. Established in St Petersburg in 1724, RAS is committed to organizing and carrying out fundamental and practical scientific research into scientific fields, such as nature, technology, humanity and society. Chinese academicians, including Guo moruo, Li Siguang, Zhou Guangzhao, Chen-Ning Yang and Shing-Tung Yau, are foreign academicians of the RAS.
At present, Shen is a professor of the Nanyang Technological University Singapore (NTU) and the honorary professor and the doctoral supervisor of Harbin University of Science and Technology. Professor Shen is the honorary professor of Lomonosov Moscow State University and he also receives the Award of Singapore New Immigrants Outstanding Contribution, the Gold Medal for Research Excellence by Institute of Physics Singapore, NTU Award for Research and Innovation, Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award at King's College, University of London, British Outstanding Overseas Student Scholarship and so on. Professor Shen joined Nanyang Technological University in 2005. He was a senior researcher of NTU Advanced Research Institute, director of Physics Department of Scientific Research Fund Committee, and member of Academic Committee; member of Tan Kah Kee Science Award Foundation, and member of Institute of Tan Kah Kee; expert of Expert Advisory Committee of Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council and member of Singapore-China Friendship Association. He is currently the director of the NTU Center for Advanced Photonics Technology, vice dean of the graduate school. As one of the founders of the NTU Interdisciplinary Graduate School, he is responsible for the Interdisciplinary Graduate School. He was also president of the Singapore-China Association for Advancement of Science and Technology, member of the International Physics Olympic Committee, president of the Singapore Olympic Physics Competition, the director of Singapore Physical Society and Materials Society, consultant of the NTU Board, vice dean of mathematical sciences department of the NTU, vice dean of science department of the NTU and so on.
Since 2012, Professor Shen has been actively promoting the work of Harbin University of Science and Technology in international exchanges and cooperation, talents training and the construction of a scientific research platform. All these have promoted the extensive cooperation between our university and well-known universities in Singapore, Russia, Germany and other prestigious universities and research institutions at home and abroad. At the same time, all these enhance the influence of our university at home and abroad in the fields of graphite, graphene, new energy storage devices and key materials. He leads the establishment of an international advanced experimental and scientific research platform. In 2019, he was approved to establish the Heilongjiang Provincial Graphite-Graphene Application Technology Collaborative Innovation Center, which becomes an important demonstration base for scientific research and talent training of universities. Professor Shen actively builds a platform for academic exchanges and joint training for the growth and development of young teachers and graduate students in our school. In the past five years, he has trained 12 young teachers and doctoral students for our university, 2 of whom have become national young talents and 3 have become provincial young talents.
