On the 7thChina Harbin International Exhibition of Scientific and Technological Achievements, Professor Ji Zesheng from School of Material Science and Engineering was interviewed for a special program “Through Harbin Exhibition” of Heilongjiang Satellite TV and News Broadcasting of Heilongjiang Satellite TV on the evenings of October 7 and October 13 respectively. Professor Ji gave a detailed introduction to the achievements of HUST in the field of automotive light-weighting.
Automotive light-weighting refers to the measure of lightening the weight of the vehicle purposely on the basis of ensuring the vehicle’s original driving safety, crashworthiness, shock resistance and comfort, and of maintaining or even reducing the cost of automobile production and the measure will boost the sustainable development strategy of energy conservation, emission reduction and environmental protection, which is the key support project of the current “Five-Year Plan”.
In the interview, he pointed out that automotive light-weighting is the integration of product structure design, advanced material research and development and advanced processing technology. Therefore, he has cooperated with the University of Tokyo for many times. After more than ten years of hard work, he has made breakthroughs in the extrusion casting process and materials and he has undertaken one international cooperation project, and many provincial and municipal scientific and technological projects and more than 10 invention patents as well.
Professor Ji used the steering knuckle as an example to introduce in detail the development process of using aluminum alloy instead of cast iron. Through lightweight structural design, material design and molding method innovation, he successfully achieved weight loss by more than 50% and got the certification of national automobile test center. The lightweight products of automobiles developed in 2013 truly replaced imports, and were successfully applied to a certain Toyota model. This technology proved internationally and domestically advanced through the evaluation of relevant departments.
In the interview, he also looked forward to the broad prospects of automotive light-weighting and new energy vehicles, and hoped that more technologies and achievements could be brought from the laboratory to the market, and that our research results would be placed on the shelves of the international market to participate in the global market competition.
