The 8thNational Undergraduate Physics Championship (CUPC) recently ended in Harbin Institute of Technology. After 20 competitions in 4 days, our team made a historic breakthrough by winning the first prize in the competitions, and the total score went up to the top 15% of the 100 participating colleges .
Supported by the Ministry of Education, CUPC has become one of the most important innovative competition activities forOutline of the National Medium and Long Term Development Plan for Education. More than one thousand students and teachers from 100 colleges and universities participated in the competition. 34 out of the 100 colleges and universities are sponsored by 985 Project such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Nanjing University and the rest are the colleges and universities sponsored by 211 Project. Therefore, CUPC can be regarded as the largest and highest physics academic event of undergraduate competition of higher learning in China.
The competition form is four-team rotation system and only one team made up of five members from a college is allowed to compete in the competition. Our team, whose members are Wang Wenyue, Dong Ruige (from Grade 15 of College of Science), Zhang Yubo, Sun Wenjie and Jiang Ying Hua (from School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering), beat the 100 colleges and finally won the first prize. Besides Harbin University and Science and Technology, Peking University, Nanjing University, University of Science and Technology of China, Beijing Normal University and other 10 universities got the first prize, too.
The 17 questions used in the competition came from the International Youth physicists Championship (IYPC), one of the most influential annual physics competitions in the world today”. All these questions were open, new, close to the real life. For example: Build a physical model and explain the influence of related parameters on the surface of the water by studying the flow of the wave motion on the rotating disc; Explore the Leibniz’s star formation mechanism of the heat surface; Build a visual instrument which can accurately determine the change of air density and study the parameters affecting the sensitivity of research; Make human hair hygrometer and then set up equation between accuracy of humidity and response time and so on. Contestants explored physical essence in the course of solving practical problems and improved their creativity in overcoming difficulties.
With one-year careful guidance and comprehensive training by tutors He Lijuan, Chen Chuntian, and Yang Wenlong, the contestants have repeatedly designed and improved the experiment plan around the theme of the competition, established the corresponding theoretical model and carried out experimental research and simulation analysis. In the final competition, the judges thought highly of them for their rigorous scientific attitude, ingenious conception, vivid experiment experimental video, perfect physical model and accurate experimental data.In the academic debate againstBeijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Zhang Yubo, Head of HUST team, got the highest score due to his excellent logical thinking, solid theoretical foundation and rich critical questioning spirit. The inspectors were so much surprised and interested in him that they couldn’t help asking him which university he was studying in. This was not only a great affirmation of the teaching level and innovative ability of undergraduate physics in our university, but also strengthened academic exchanges between HUST and top colleges and universities. The excellent performance of the contestants from HUST brought our university with a good social reputation.
The outstanding achievements of the students in this competition reflected that leaders in HUST had attached great importance to the training of the students’ innovative consciousness and practical abilities, and to the reform of personnel training mode. Teachers were willing to devote themselves to the reform of education and teaching, guide students to combine physics knowledge with exploration practice and pay attention to improving students’ innovative abilities, practical abilities and team work spirits in practice. This competition is a reflection of our school’s focus on undergraduate teaching. It is also a breakthrough in science learning organization of the competitions on the undergraduate. College of Science will unswervingly continue to improve the undergraduate teaching so as to provide a solid foundation and mathematical science atmosphere for school personnel training.
