Jointly held by the Department of Higher Education and China Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling is a scientific competition for national undergraduates of all the majors and is one of the five national key scientific contests sponsored by the Ministry of Education. On the 20th anniversary of the contest, the Committee of China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling held the activity of appraising and electing the “National Excellent Teacher and Organizer of the China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling” in 31 contest zones all over the nation (including Hong Kong and Taiwan).

Through the recommendation of Heilongjiang contest zone and the appraising and electing of national organization committee, Professor Chen Dongyan of the School of Applied Mathematics of our university was awarded the title of “Excellent Teacher of China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling” and Professor Ji Donghai was elected as the “Excellent Organizer of China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling”. Totally, there were 6 “Excellent Teachers” and 2 “Excellent Organizers” in Heilongjiang contest zone in this activity this year. The two awards got by the professors of our university owed much to the close attention paid by the Party Committee of HUST to the innovative talents cultivation and many years’ hard work done by the teachers of mathematical modeling, indicating the contest instruction and organization by our university has got the recognition of other schools in this field.

Our university first participated in the mathematical contest in modeling in 1993, from 1995, took part in the China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling consecutively, and from 2002, started to compete in the American Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling. We have got 31 national 1st and 2nd prizes, 32 American 1st and 2nd prizes and over 100 contest zone 1st , 2nd and 3rd prizes. Considering the excellent performance of mathematical contest in modeling of our university, in 2007, the grand Working Conference of National Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling and the Award Ceremony were held here, increasing the influence of HUST greatly. The participation of this contest has enlivened the learning atmosphere, and found and cultivated many talents, helping them to become the elites in the field.

Our university will take this opportunity to further develop the organization and instruction of mathematical contest in modeling and try to make more achievements.
