The First ACM Programming Contest of HUST Is Over

Hosted by the Academic Affairs Office and undertaken by the School of Computer Science and Technology and the Computing Centre, the first ACM Programming Contest in our school was held in Room 149, Building No. 1, Computer Center Lab, Southern Campus. Mr. Song Qingkun, Deputy Director of Academic Affairs Office, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. The contest has been attached great importance by school leaders at all levels and greatly supported by all the departments and teachers.

Sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest is an annual competition aimed at showing the students innovation, teamwork and the ability of writing programs, analyzing and solving problems under pressure. After 30 years of development, ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest has become the most influential college students’ computer competition, which is recognized as the world’s largest collegiate programming contest of the highest level, known as the Olympic of the world college students’ computer competition.

The first ACM Programming Contest aimed at inspiring our students’ interests in studying computer programming, developing their potential, cultivating the innovative and practical ability and teamwork spirit, at the same time selecting competitors representing our school to participate in the competition at the provincial level. After 16 days of training, practice sessions and warm-up matches, 102 competitors in 160 competitors from more than 10 schools entered the final round. After 3 hours of intense competition in the final, 15 competitors won First Prize, 20 competitors won Second Prize, 25 competitors won Third Prize, one competitor (freshman) won Best Newcomer Award, and one competitor won Best Female Competitor Award.

Coordinated and organized by the Academic Affairs Office and implemented by the School of Computer Science and Technology and Computing Centre, this competition was in strict accordance with international competition’s process, so it was a complete success. Liu Pi’e, ACM coaching staff, is the leader of this competition, and the coaching staff Mei Xian, Sheng Shouguo and Jiang Shaoyu organized competition training and practice guidance for the competitors for many times. Throughout the training and competition, Computing Centre who overcame the difficulties of not having enough laboratories, adjusted experimental teaching time, tested the equipment, installed software, and built a steady and excellent hardware environment for the competition. The leaders of the School of Computer Science and Technology coordinated the arrangements for the workers’ training which was carried out by the Student Union, which ensured the progress of the contest smoothly.

There is a wide range of students to participate in this competition, which has a great influence among the students. The students have said that through this competition they not only have increased the interests in learning, but also through the contest platform, have applied their knowledge to solve practical problems, which improved their computer programming ability and benefited themselves a lot. For the success of our school’s first ACM Programming Contest, Academic Affairs Office will continue to host all kinds of college students’ competitions to explore and reform our teaching methods and to improve teaching quality in this process. In the meanwhile, the students can be stimulated to develop the interests in learning, to enhance the sense of competition and practical ability, to improve the academic atmosphere and to enhance their sense of responsibility and sense of honor. All these competitions will improve the practical and innovative ability and level of our school.
