On January 28th, HUST welcomed Dr. Liu Yixiong, global technical director at Kennametal Inc., the world’s second largest tooling company, and Dr. He Genghuang at Xiamen Tungsten Company for their visit.
In the morning, the experts paid a visit to the Lab of National and Local United Engineering for High Efficiency Cutting and Tools Technology and Engineering Training Center. They were accompanied by Professor Yang Shucai, Director of Engineering Training Center and Professor Wang Yiwen, Vice Dean of School of Mechanical and Power Engineering during their visit. Dr. Liu delivered an academic report entitledFracture Analysis of WC-Co Cemented Carbides,which centered on the research of carbide composite nonlinear fracture. From the perspective of industrial production, Dr. Liu explained in detail the application of carbide fracture model, which is instructive to the research of tooling technology conducted by HUST. After the report, Dr. Liu answered questions and exchanged ideas with teachers and students from School of Mechanical and Power Engineering and Engineering Training Center. Dr. Liu and Dr. He, together with teachers and students, attended meetings and had academic communication. Present at the meeting were Professor Liu Xianli, Dean of Mechanical and Power Engineering School, Professor Jiangbin and Professor Wang Yiwen, Vice Deans of the school, and Professor Yang Shucai, Director of Engineering Training Center. Both sides hoped that closer cooperation should be fostered between HUST and well-renowned companies at home and abroad, for example Kennametal and Xiamen Tungsten Company. With the aim of achieving mutual benefits, they should make joint efforts to build strategic development and cooperation platforms, which will provide students with more study and job opportunities, thus cultivating talented graduates and gaining win-win situation.

In the afternoon, Dr. Liu and Dr. He attended “a symposium on comparison and contrast between Chinese and American engineering education”. Dr. He shared his experience of learning and working in USA, especially his experience of working as global technical director at Kennametal Inc. In regard to the teaching plan and the cultivation of talents, he proposed some suggestions. Consensus on cooperation between the university and enterprises and the cultivation of talents was reached between him and leaders of the school.
Expert Profile
Dr. Liu Yixiong devotes himself to the study of metallic material. Majoring in Material Science and Engineering at University of Science and Technology Beijing, he got his bachelor’s degree in 1982 and master’s degree in 1984. In 1993, he obtained his doctorate from University of Alabama. From 1993 to 1995, he worked as a researcher at Pennsylvania State University, and later, he worked at the technical center of Kennametal Inc headquarters, assuming the position of senior engineer, professional engineer, senior professional engineer, senior manager of CVD/PVD surface technology department, and global technical director. He has presided over and participated in several projects regarding the invention of new technologies and its industrial products. He got 36 world patents and published more than 70 academic articles in famous overseas materials journals and meetings. Meanwhile, in regard to the research of metallic material, optimization of production process, and cutting and tools technology, strategic partnership has been built with prestigious universities in several countries, including China, USA, Germany, and Sweden.
