With the auspicious seasonable snow indicating a promising New Year, HUST is waving goodbye to 2010 and embracing 2011, starting her new journey on next 60th anniversary confidently. Hereby, taking this opportunity, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all members of the faculty and staff, and hearty congratulations and best wishes to all the students.

2010 has seen great changes inChina. We experienced vicissitudes of completing the 11th Five-Year Plan, struggling against natural disasters, again demonstrating Chinese nation’s unassailable strength and achieving steady development among the complicated international situation. Also in this year, World Expo, which has long enjoyed its laudatory title of “Olympic Games for Economy, Culture and Technology”, has successfully launched inShanghai, and it is the first time for all the developing countries. The 16th Asian Games, Chang’e II Mission, everything that has happened in 2010 makes everyone feel proud for this great nation — China!

To HUST, 2010 is also an extraordinary year, in which we successfully held the 60th anniversary celebration, through which we summarize experiences, distill HUST spirit, demonstrate fruits and capabilities through generations’ arduous work, and promote social reputation.

Apart from the magnificent 60th anniversary’s celebration event, we also achieve greatly in educational administration and talents cultivation both for undergraduates and postgraduates, regardless of the expansion of doctorate development in this extraordinary year.

Academically speaking, it is also an unprecedented and incomparable year in the application of National Natural Science Foundation Projects, and accomplished the best in provincial academic prize. Seventy-nine authorized patents, 1,500 academic papers, National leveled Science andTechnologyGarden, 27.5% doctor-degreed teachers, and so on and so forth, all of the work done in this year made our university achieve steady development, and students’ employment rate has been ranking among the top all through these years.

In 2010 HUST has witnessed many breakthroughs in different fields to national level, and has been classified as one of the provincial major constructive key universities, with great improvement of our comprehensive strength and administrative capabilities, which all resulted from HUST peoples’ wisdom and efforts.

2011 being the beginning of the second decade in the new century, we are clearly aware that ability and achievements have the say. Consequently, we must adhere to the long-term development planning, encourage patriotism, and advocate the spirit of cooperation and creativity, to further develop the university through talents, quality and tactics.

I sincerely hope that all the faculty members and students could unite together to strive for greater achievements — constructing HUST into a people satisfying, socially approved, high-leveled university with crowning glory!

Last, may you have a good fortune, and good health! Happy New Year!
