Two HUST Students Win Nomination of National Self-Improvement Star of 2015

The result of “National Self-Improvement Star” of 2015 has been revealed in Beijing recently, and HUST students Ma Tao from School of Applied Sciences and Mi Xin from School of Material Science and Engineering won the nomination of “National Self-Improvement Star”.

Ma Tao, a member of Communist Party of China, is the head of the First Graduate Students Teaching Corps in HUST, responsible for serving the poverty-stricken county. Needy student as he is, Ma has an enriched spirits. He was former head of the Forum of College Students, deputy director of Students Working Assistant Office, vice-president of School’s Association of Theory Studies, assistant of Secretary of Youth League committee, Party branch secretary of graduates of 2015 in the School of Applied Science. He has won the nomination for “National Self-Improvement Star” of 2015, the Chinese Telecommunications Scholarship of 2016, the award of Excellent Volunteer for National Graduates Teaching Corps in the years of 2015 and 2016, the Outstanding Student Award in the province, Provincial Excellent Volunteer Award for “Millions of Graduates to the community”. He has applied for four national utility-model patents, one invention patent, participated in one national nature science fund, and got many school-level scholarship. When he graduated with her bachelor’s degree, he chose to work as a volunteer for a total of 9,000 hours in the poverty-stricken county, Tailai County, instead of working in big cities for decent salary and a secure job. During his volunteer work, he not only taught local students in class, but also launched various activities to promote teaching, and fund-raising activities, including aid materials worth of 50,000 yuan, carried out over 30 home visits, and brought over 100 books. It was estimated that 800 students benefited from these activities. His model deeds have been covered over 20 times by various local media.

Mi Xin, a member of Communist party of China, majoring in material engineering, is the monitor of life of Grade 201, Class 2, in School of Material Science and Engineering. He has won the School Self-Improvement Award, and was honored the award of People Who Moved HUST. Meanwhile, he has won many awards including “Excellent Student Award” of both school and province, scholarship of the school and national level. He participated in one research project, and published the paper in the journal of composite materials. He was also honored the national second prize in preliminary China Undergraduates Mathematical Contest in 2014, and the national first prize in China Undergraduates Mathematical Contest in 2015, the provincial second prize and national honorable mention of China Undergraduates Mechanical Competition in honor of Zhou Peiyuan. During his college years, he did many part-time jobs to support himself and his brother to study. For two successive years he did volunteer work by visiting the countryside to teach. He also participated in many school societies, including Student Union, Association of Theory Studies, Association of Library, Association of Volunteers, Potential Training Camp and so forth. To sum up, he is an all-round student.
